Position Summary A Medical Technologist in Clinical Genomics is expected to perform 1) clinical diagnostic testing which includes DNA sequence data analysis from high-complexity tests such as the solid tumor sequencing panel, the hematologic malignancies sequencing panel, and clinical exome sequencing; 2) perform variant curation and interpretation, develop protocols for variant curation and classification; and 3) participate in new test developments and clinical research projects. Perform CLIA clinical diagnostic testing with a variety of tests of a moderately or highly complex nature on patient and quality control samples for molecular pathology procedures. Duties & Responsibilities Perform highly and moderately complex tests by various analyzers in the Laboratory, and/or by manual methods, on various specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids, using established procedures, under close supervision. PCR Procedures to detect and quantitate RNA and DNA for various genomic markers. DNA sequencing on solid tumor/oncology specimens Perform routine molecular pathology procedures as needed: Manual DNA/RNA extractions from whole blood, urine, saliva, cerebral spinal fluid, BAL and other body fluids as needed. Automated Extractions: performs extraction of DNA and/or RNA extractions using an automated system and applies knowledge of extraction theory to troubleshoot system. Preparation/Storage of reagents- prepares various reagents used for variety of molecular techniques such as PCR master mix and stores appropriately; apply knowledge of use of various pieces of equipment used in the preparation of reagents. Manipulate and operate simple and complex laboratory equipment including computers and sequencers; perform maintenance and limited tear down and replacement of parts of laboratory equipment; problem-solve equipment malfunctions. Review test results before reporting, using technical and scientific knowledge to recognize and verify results. Consult with supervisor prior to the release of results when results are unusual or unanticipated. Notify patients' physician(s) of life-threatening results. Perform established quality assurance procedures (i.e., quality control testing, instrument function checks and calibrations) and maintain appropriate records for these procedures. Understand the statistics applied to the quality assurance program and review and maintain the records. Knowledge in molecular biology related protocols (including DNA/RNA preparation and quantification, hybridization, PCR, multiplex amplification, Next Generation Sequencing required) Solid understanding of genetics, NGS technology, and statistics. Data analysis including scripting, programming, statistical analyses. Use the laboratory information system for all records, functions and inquiries related to testing of patient specimens. Performs molecular tests according to SOP for diagnostic and research samples. Performs research data gathering and downstream data processing and bioinformatics analysis. Complete Corrective Action Reports to thoroughly document any matter requiring follow-up or corrective action Support and adhere to all CLIA and OSHA guidelines (OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standards) and all regulatory standards of UIH. Assists in the orientation and training of new employees. Participates in the training of technical staff and monitors their progress with supervisor. Interact with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and in person in a pleasant and helpful manner. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent. Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1489. Preferred Qualifications A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in related field Must have a bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in Science, that meets the CLIA requirements to perform high complexity testing. Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods Experience in working with different widely used sequencing platforms and genomic analysis pipelines preferred Experience with programming using UNIX/LINUX clusters preferred Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint Understand and follow the guidelines for prevention of contamination of molecular testing areas. Understand the function of the medical laboratories in the health care environment. Certification in one of the following certifications: Certified as Medical Laboratory Scientists, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, Histotechnologist (HTL), or categorical (BB, C, CG. CT, DLM, H, M, MB, PA, SCYM) certification by Board of Certification. (ASCP). Certified as a Medical Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT) Certified as Clinical Laboratory Scientist by National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory personnel (NCA) Clinical Microbiology registry from American Society for Microbiology, RM(AAM) Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) Fully complete all sections of the online application including adding your full work history with specific details of your duties & responsibilities for each position held.
