POSITION SUMMARY
A tutor is a vital link between our STEP students (grades 8th 12th in the Syracuse City School District), Academic Coordinators, Associate Directors, and the Director. The tutor functions as a student advocate and role model, and assists program participants to achieve both academic and professional success.
This is a part time position for after school hours (approx. 2pm-4:30pm) Monday Thursday with occasional Saturday hours.
This position is a grant funded position. Renewal is based on funding being available from external sources and the performance review process by external sources and is contingent on the continued receival of those funds.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Job duties specific to this position:
Providing academic assistance to STEP students one-on-one and in small groups on assignments, studying, reviewing and learning STEM content.
Motivating students collectively and individually to achieve academic success through encouraging, advising, and planning strategies, while supporting STEP philosophy and reflecting this in interactions with students.
Functioning as a student advocate in all interactions with parents/guardians and teachers.
Fostering a program environment conducive to the academic, social, and personal development of students.
Supporting the STEP philosophy and reflecting this in his/her interaction with students, families, staff, the community of the host institution and the greater Syracuse community.
Promoting a culture of connectivity and belonging among students to mitigate feelings of isolation and disconnection.
Recording and reporting student utilization.

Performs a variety of related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required, Math - Science majors preferred. NYS Teaching certificate preferred.
An interest in, and commitment to, high school students.
Commitment to, and comfort with, culturally diverse populations.
Excellent communication skills required.
This is a position includes 1-2 Saturdays per month.
Flexibility and adaptability essential.
