Position Summary:

The Center for Community & Public Health, a center of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research (KIUR) at Rice University, is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow to participate in NIH-Funded research investigating the effects of food insecurity and social adversity on migrant health. The Postdoctoral Fellow will gain expertise in the use of community-engaged science, mixed methods, and the use of biomarkers of health risk and resilience to address health disparities among historically marginalized immigrants. The research agenda for the Postdoctoral Fellow will be developed in close collaboration with the Community & Public Health Director and other members of the research team.

The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to effectively communicate research findings through research briefs and peer-reviewed papers, presentations, and the media to various audiences, including community partners and stakeholders. The postdoc may supervise and train small research teams of graduate and undergraduate students. Importantly, the Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to work with our staff grants team to pursue career-development research grants (e.g., K01, F32) in areas related to the Center's research agenda.

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research is an interdisciplinary research organization that works in direct partnership with community agencies and organizations that use its research, data, and policy analysis to implement solutions to critical challenges. The institute aims to improve lives through data, research, engagement, and action. It consists of five centers that conduct research on housing , education , public health , economic mobility , and population dynamics . Centers conduct research that focuses on their particular topics, as well as research that intersects across centers, through interdisciplinary teams.

Workplace Requirements:

This position offers a hybrid work schedule within Harris County and surrounding counties, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration.

Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

Salary: $60,000

This is a one-year term position, with a possibility to extend for an additional year.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in Psychology, Public Health, or related fields

Skills:
  • Excellent technical and data analysis skills, particularly in quantitative or mixed methods
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as oral presentation skills
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment, to participate actively, to collaborate and to motivate others
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and direction
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to handle bulk data collection and analysis

Preferences:
  • Bilingual in Spanish

Essential Functions:
  • Performs independent and collaborative specialized research in the following areas: interviews, surveys, document analysis, and administrative education data.
  • Mentors, oversees, and/or supports student RAs and/or other early career researchers.
  • Communicates the research findings through verbal presentations and publications/reports.
  • Supports project management.
  • Designs and implements research protocols; adapts new procedures, methods, or instrumentation relative to research procedures.
  • Some research-related travel, as well as event attendance and engagement to the Department programs
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
