The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has an opportunity for an EHS Specialist to join the Department of Environmental Health and Safety's Environmental Program. The EHS Specialist is responsible for implementing programs that will promote the health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors and providing consultation on issues regarding environmental compliance and waste management. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for the design and implementation of programs to enhance safety at UMB. The department provides consultation and services to research laboratories, clinical areas, facilities, and offices in the areas of chemical, biological, and radioactive materials safety; occupational safety and industrial hygiene; and environmental compliance and hazardous waste management. The department's offices are in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor, and the position involves travel to other local entities supported by UMB.

Department of Environmental Health and Safety at UMB:
The Environmental Health and Safety Programs at UMB encompass several key areas to ensure a safe and compliant environment. Environmental Programs manage hazardous materials from collection to disposal, ensuring compliance with regulations and readiness for incidents. Occupational Safety and Health focuses on reducing injury and illness risks through inspections, assessments, and training. Research Safety aims to minimize exposure to hazardous materials, providing risk assessments and guidance for safe laboratory practices. Radiation Safety ensures compliance with radioactive materials licenses, oversees x-ray machine safety, administers dosimetry, and promotes laser safety in research labs.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee collection, classification, segregation, storage, and shipping of hazardous waste, including preparation and submission of necessary shipping and regulatory reports in accordance with scientific protocols and federal, state and local regulations
  • Conduct weekly inspections and maintain inventory of radioactive waste, ensuring compliance with disposal regulations and timely reporting.
  • Monitor and manage maintenance of Underground Storage Tanks and Emergency Generators, including tracking testing requirements and emissions reporting.
  • Provide consultation and support to EHS staff in preparing reports and recommendations on areas of non-compliance with federal and state laws or regulations or university policies in the areas of environmental permitting and hazardous waste management.
  • Support and work collaboratively with other EHS teams, including but not limited to working with the Research Safety and Radiation Safety teams to find solutions to issues identified through laboratory inspections and the Occupational Safety and Health team to perform indoor air quality assessments and respirator fit testing.
  • Keep abreast of changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization as it relates to environmental compliance and hazardous waste management.
  • Participate in the response to campus emergencies involving environmental, occupational, life, fire, and laboratory safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree, with a preference for a relevant field such as environmental engineering, environmental science, occupational health, health physics, chemistry, or biology.
Experience: One (1) year progressive experience in hazardous materials management, occupational and life safety, environmental compliance, biosafety or radiation safety.
Other: This position allows for substitution. Related experience (4 years) may substitute for education. A related master's degree may be substituted for experience.

Special Conditions of Employment:
  • Employee must be eligible for the University's authorized driver program to drive a university owned vehicle. Authorized drivers must have a valid driver's license in the State of Maryland. Those who possess a valid driver's license from another state are responsible for submitting a certified copy of the driving record from the Motor Vehicle Administration in that state to the appropriate school/department administrator at the time the employee begins work at the University.
  • Physical requirements: Light to moderate physical effort is generally required. Some activities will require traversing the campus and remaining standing for long periods of time while others require being able to remain sedentary for 50% of the time. Employee will be required to position themselves to lower levels, including crouching or kneeling to reach desired locations. Employee will occasionally ascend/descend ladders/stools. The employee must be able to carry/move/transport up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Hazardous Materials: Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions. Position will require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals, or infectious agents are present. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator, in certain circumstances where personal protection is determined to be needed. Offers of employment may be contingent on applicant obtaining appropriate medical clearance by university approved medical staff.

Hiring Range: $61,000 to $68,000, commensurate with education and experience.
