Position Overview

The Systems Engineer position lies within the Balance of Plant Protection and Control Engineering team in Operations of Avangrid Renewables. Balance of Plants Protection and Control Engineering team is responsible for engineering design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance functions for approximately 70 high-voltage substations and associated overhead/underground facilities. This includes hardware, software, communication systems, and data concentration for protection and controls, RTUs, and integration systems.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the Systems Engineer position are related to Protection, Controls, Automation, and other BOP support. Other responsibilities of the position are related to supporting Subject Matter Expert and Reliability Assurance team on Compliance issues. Part of the responsibilities is to travel and support on-site execution of projects (approximately 20% of the time)

  • Design and program protective relays and controls, RTUs, substation logic processors, and associated systems.
  • Analyze Protection System operations and assist in timely return to service.
  • Conduct, analyze and process power system studies (e.g., load flow, short-circuit, grounding, etc.).
  • Oversee quality and accuracy of numerous electrical engineering consultants and electrical contractors associated with new project development and operational substations.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis and corrective action for protection systems operations and BOP equipment failure.
  • Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for maintenance, testing, repairs, and upgrades to BOP facilities.
  • Assist in development and upkeep of design standards, procedures, and documentation.
  • Provide technical assistance to internal and external stakeholders for a wide variety of projects involving BOP facilities.
  • In the event of critical failures, provide support to site personnel with analyzing failures and support switching procedures outside of working hours (on a rotation basis with other team members).
  • Assist in the development and upkeep of NERC PRC compliance.
  • Streamline processes, documentation, and evidence to improve scalability, program management, and automation.
  • Must be willing to work in high and medium voltage substation and collector system facilities.
  • On-site work may involve inclement weather, electrical hazards, climbing turbines and ladders, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Provide clear direction for numerous contractors performing on-site implementation work.
Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering/Science or equivalent degree required
  • 2 or more years of direct experience required. Experience to include designing power systems including protection and controls, RTUs and substation integration applications.
  • Working knowledge of industry and regulatory standards (e.g., IEEE, NEC, NESC, NETA, OSHA, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of NERC PRC standards
  • Working knowledge and understanding of elementary diagrams, SEL and/or GE relay settings development, short-circuit analysis and protective device coordination
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and the development of electrical design drawings
  • A current driver's license is required
  • Protective relay commissioning and testing experience
  • Working knowledge of IEC 61131-3 programming, or the fundamentals of procedural and structural programming, as well as digital logic
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, SEL, Mirrored Bits, etc.), and serial/Ethernet network topology (OSI layers 1-4)
  • Working knowledge of power system modeling software (such as EasyPower or ETAP), Aspen Relay Database, SEL AcSELerator, Mathcad Prime, and AutoCAD
  • Demonstrated, hands-on testing experience with relays and RTUs
