GIS Analyst - Military Veterans

This is the intermediate level of the GIS Data Analyst classification hierarchy. Employees at this level are expected to work independently, or as part of a team, with some general supervision, and to develop advanced skills. Provides support role in maintaining GIS data integrity across multiple data platforms, including spatial and tabular datasets. Supports the function of data processes (data analysis, maintenance, data enrichment, development, ETLs, audits) for assigned business units to ensure that all geospatial data and applications meet internal standards and can be fully utilized to maximize their value to the business.This includes such tasks as querying and analyzing engineering data, creating and running reports, cartographic design, and development of web and mobile applications, dashboards, quality checks, and other tools. As such, incumbent must gain knowledge of the data maintained within the supported database systems and knowledge of the business unit's assets as well as the maintenance and construction activities which that data represents. Tasks and deliverables are more complex in nature and require deeper technical expertise and knowledge to complete. Leadership skills are necessary to provide oversight and direction of work in specific area of expertise.

Responsibilities

With Some Supervision:

Business and Customer Support:
• Support Duke Energy by safely and cost-effectively delivering reliable service to our customers, and remaining compliant with various regulatory standards and requirements, by maintaining, reporting and analyzing data contained in various data management systems within assigned department(s).
• Demonstrates increasing knowledge of applications, data, and business processes used by internal business partners.
• Prepares thorough data and reports to various personnel as requested
• Provides technical expertise on data management, data integrity within Duke systems of record, data use policies, and other business processes as needed.
• Delivers high-quality results in a timely manner, meeting or exceeding established deadlines or promised data.
• Establishes and maintains open communications and effective working relationships with Managers, Supervisors, and individual contributors within the "customer" departments within Duke Energy.
• Demonstrates increasing knowledge of infrastructure and operations functions.
• Assists in delivery of customized training, including, but not limited to, communicating information to field personnel and peers.

Organizational Skills:
• Uses time and resources effectively in completing individual work assignments to meet established schedules.
• Uses good judgement in making decisions on assigned work activities.
• Effectively solves more complex problems which have typically been previously identified.
• Proficient in managing projects.

Teamwork and Communication:
• Works well with those in immediate work group and counterparts across the company.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, GIS, Geography, Geology or a related discipline and 2 or more years of relevant industry experience; or Associate Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, GIS, Geography, Geology or related discipline and 6 or more years of relevant industry experience; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 or more years of industry related experience.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, GIS, Geography, Geology or a related discipline

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successfully completed college-level or certification courses in database systems, data structures, and data querying/analytics, reporting tools and programming languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of the distribution, gas and/or transmission systems equipment and associated safety and maintenance policies, practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with numerous organizational levels of personnel both within and external to the company.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with ability and willingness to share information and transfer knowledge to others.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of software applications such as Microsoft Office products and familiarity with retrieving all applicable corporate information.
  • Demonstrated strong customer-service attitude.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills.
  • Experience in cartographic design and/or development of web and mobile applications and dashboards in the geospatial information system ecosystem.

Working Conditions:
  • Sedentary work exerting negligible amount of force frequently or constantly and/or up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, involves sitting most of the time at a computer, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
  • Vision and hearing acuity for communication with others.
  • Able to be flexible and work additional hours as needed.
  • May require occasional overnight travel and infrequent work on evening or weekends.
  • On call support
