Combined Insurance, a Chubb Group company, is a leading provider of group workplace supplemental accident, disability, health and life insurance products ("Combined"). The General Counsel, Combined Insurance is responsible for providing legal and compliance support for Combined Insurance. The General Counsel will function as a trusted legal advisor to the senior management team of Combined and manage an experienced and talented team of legal and compliance professionals that support the business. The position focuses on providing timely, efficient, knowledgeable, and practical counsel while appropriately balancing compliance and business goals.
This role operates on a hybrid schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote) in our Chicago, IL office. Other Chubb office locations may be considered.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
As a key member of the Combined leadership team, the General Counsel will provide business and legal advice and perspectives on a wide range of strategic, tactical and operational issues including insurance regulatory matters; compliance; corporate law; corporate governance; labor and employment matters; litigation; marketing; and technology initiatives.
The position will report to the President of Combined Insurance with direct matrix reporting to the North America General Counsel of Chubb Insurance. The General Counsel will manage a team of approximately 35 managers and employees. Extensive coordination with Chubb Group Global and North America Legal and Compliance teams is required.
- Communicate credibly and effectively with Combined executive and senior management, underwriters, claims professionals, and L&C colleagues to provide clear guidance on legal and compliance issues affecting the Combined business
- oversee and supervise the Combined Legal & Compliance unit, with responsibility for day-to-day functional supervision of the team.
- ensure that the business policies and practices of the organization are performed in accordance with regulatory requirements
- collaborate with business partners on product development, sales, marketing, claims, and technology initiatives
- represent Combined in dealings with applicable regulatory bodies and government agencies
- oversee litigation involving Combined in coordination with Chubb's Global Litigation team
- Juris Doctor Degree and admitted or eligible to be admitted to practice law in Illinois
- 10+ years of relevant business law experience with demonstrated understanding/experience of the insurance field
- 5+ years in a leadership position
- Strong knowledge of and experience with group accident and health insurance and workplace benefits products
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills and ability to effectively interact with business partners
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills and strong presentation skills
- Negotiation and diplomacy skills
- Ability to effectively influence with and without authority
- Demonstrated ability to align legal and business strategies
- Sound business acumen
