Assistant Professor of Creative Writing - Fiction College: College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and The Arts - 321 College Dept/School: Creative Writing - 32131 Vacancy Number: 16F-644 Position Number: 6737 Location of Workplace: Main UNCW Campus Brief Summary of Work for this Position: The Department of Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applicants for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Creative Writing/Fiction position on a continuing 9-month appointment starting August 2025. Upon initial appointment, and dependent on the selected candidate's expertise and passions, responsibilities will entail teaching a range of graduate and undergraduate creative writing courses, including workshops, craft-based literature courses, and courses in the publishing arts. The selected candidate will also direct and read MFA theses, mentor graduate teaching assistants, and serve on departmental and university committees, joining a nationally recognized department that houses both a BFA and an MFA in Creative Writing, as well as graduate and undergraduate Certificates in Publishing. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: A terminal degree in Creative Writing (MFA, PhD) or closely related field at time of application At least one book of fiction of literary merit from a national press Demonstrated, sustained excellence in teaching fiction writing at both undergraduate and graduate levels Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with: Secondary expertise, which may include a strong publication record in poetry or nonfiction, or experience working and teaching in the publishing arts Experience teaching the work of writers historically or currently underrepresented in American and global literature curricula Required Certifications or Licensure: N/A Primary Function of Organizational Unit: The UNCW Department of Creative Writing is a community of deeply committed writers who believe that the creation of art is valuable to self and culture. College/School Information: The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration as well as combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in Spanish and English. The CHSSA contributes significantly to the curriculum that comprises UNCW's University Studies Program, through which all undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century.
