Role Purpose

The skill and experience of our Perioperative Surgical Technologist is a critical component at BJH and SLCH to support the type of cases that exist as a result of the Level 1 Trauma designation and Safety Net status. As a member of a highly skilled Magnet designated institution, working with an inter-professional team, this individual will provide care to complex, acute, and critically ill patients undergoing life-saving treatment. The mastery level surgical technologist demonstrates clinical expertise to support the high-acuity complex case mix. These include high volume: trauma, transplant, cardiovascular, endovascular, cardiothoracic, complex spine procedures and specialty neurosurgical procedures unique to the St. Louis region. The work takes place in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and requires experiential as well as specialty knowledge with specific procedures. The mastery level surgical technologist will perform in the first scrub role handling instruments, supplies, and necessary equipment throughout the surgical procedure. They have exceptional critical thinking skills through extensive experience in surgical procedures being performed to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and team to achieve optimal outcomes within the surgical environment.

 

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a resource and subject matter expert and mentor in the OR speciality area for complex cases. Experience in Level 1 Trauma Program and specialized in one or more of these areas: - Experience in cardiovascular, endovascular or solid organ transplant cases - Experience with complex neurosurgical procedures including intraoperative MRI - Experience with complex orthopedic and neurosurgical spine cases
  • Effectively collaborates with physicians and OR teams to meet clinical quality, safety, regulatory and clinical goals for thesurgical patient population served. Actively participates in interdisciplinary committees to promote and enhance best practices within the surgical setting.
  • Partners with lead team members, in collaboration with clinical partners and leadership, utilizing clinical experience and evidence-based resources to identify practice standards or gaps and meet key operational and clinical metrics while supporting magnet initiatives.
  • Promotes interprofessional care team participation by leading team communication, expert level of care delivery and advocating for patient safety and quality in the surgical setting. Serves as mentor and preceptor to support and elevate skill set of team members.
  • Performs in the first scrub role handling instruments, supplies, and necessary equipment throughout the surgical procedure. Through extensive experience in surgical procedures, possesses critical thinking skills in regards to the procedure being performed, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and team to achieve optimal outcomes within the surgical environment.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
