Dean of the Faculty College of the Holy Cross Location Worcester MA Open Date Nov 06, 2023 Deadline Dec 04, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description The Office of the Provost invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Faculty, to begin on July 1, 2024. The Dean of Faculty will be a creative and collaborative scholar with a well-developed vision of the future of liberal arts education and the desire to advance the Colleges academic excellence. Working closely with the Provost, the Dean will lead key strategic initiatives that expand and diversify the faculty and enhance the Colleges standing as a national leader in cutting-edge scholarship and transformational learning within the undergraduate liberal arts context. The Dean of Faculty will play a decisive role in amplifying the Colleges academic excellence by leading the recruitment and support of faculty (including through cluster and cross-disciplinary hiring initiatives as well as tenure-track and visiting hiring), cultivating strong departments, advising the Provost on budget allocations and investments, and translating strategic priorities into concrete actions that support and grow a world-class faculty at Holy Cross. The Deans portfolio of responsibilities includes: overseeing the academic departments and interdisciplinary programs (including the appointment of department chairs); faculty hiring/recruitment and retention; designing and implementing policies related to academic excellence and faculty affairs; promoting positive departmental culture; advising department chairs and program directors on personnel matters; leading departmental external reviews; advising on departmental procedures and practices; advising the Provost during faculty merit processes, budget allocations, and infrastructure investments; participating in faculty and College-wide governance on behalf of the Provost and as a partner with departments, offices, and governance bodies. The Dean of Faculty works closely and collaboratively with the Dean of Faculty Development on a wide range of faculty and academic affairs matters. The Dean will participate in recruiting an academic affairs professional to join the Provosts Office; that new colleague will be a trusted partner and collaborator with the Dean. Ongoing scholarly activity and pedagogical engagement is crucial to success in the role. The Dean will work with the Provost to identify a balance of responsibilities (with suitable support) in order to enable continuing active research and/or teaching one course annually. The Dean is a direct report of the Provost and Dean of the College and the senior member of the Provosts Cabinet. As a member of the Provosts leadership team, the Dean works with other Deans and members of the cabinet as well as College-wide leadership, establishing trust, communicating with clarity, demonstrating flexibility, and bringing a growth-oriented, problem-solving mindset to the role. Features of the Position The Dean will serve for an initial four-year term in the Provosts Office. All faculty leadership appointments in the Provosts Office are for 12 months; the underlying tenured appointment remains in place during the term of service. Salary for the 12 month appointment will be nationally competitive. Under normal circumstances, the faculty salary and the administrative supplement will increase annually presuming effective service as Dean. Upon completion of at least 4 years of service, the Dean will enjoy a full-year sabbatical at 100% of the faculty salary at the next window of eligibility, and will receive enhanced support for research and professional development. Qualifications Characteristics, Mindsets, and Qualifications currently in a tenured faculty position at Holy Cross, or qualified to assume a tenured faculty position in an academic discipline offered at Holy Cross; diplomacy, optimism, creativity, curiosity, commitment to effective collaboration; demonstrated success in an administrative, service or leadership role, especially in roles that require oversight of faculty; professional awareness of trends and challenges in US higher education, including a vision for faculty recruitment and retention strategies suited to a liberal arts context; clarity, efficacy and style as a writer and communicator; demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence ; comfort with budgets, financial information, and strategic planning; deep understanding of the goals and characteristics of a liberal arts education, with a well-articulated vision for the future of the liberal arts at Holy Cross; understanding of our Jesuit mission and of the distinctive possibilities available to Holy Cross; precision, attention to detail, and comfort with budgets and planning.
