Job Summary Reporting to a Security Shift Supervisor and Duty Officer, at the direction of the Chief of Campus Security and Parking Services, or their designee, Campus Security Special Response Officers (SRO) are experienced, patrol qualified, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certified officers, who are responsible for performing a wide variety of specialized campus security functions. The SRO must exhibit leadership traits and characteristics, discretion, a comprehensive knowledge of the law and the highest ethical standards. The SRO must be service-oriented and must actively assist Caltech community members in solving problems and maintaining the peace. This is a Campus Critical position. An employee designated as campus critical is expected to be aware of the campus emergency management plan and to report to Campus as soon as possible to assist in campus wide response and recovery efforts. The duties of this classification include (but are not limited to) the following: Campus Security Function Protecting life and property. Preventing crime. Ensuring a safe learning environment. Making scheduled rounds, both on- and off-campus, and outside campus buildings, to maintain a secure environment. Investigating reports of crime. Primary response to high security labs and research facilities. Assisting Environmental Health and Safety professionals. Delivering service in a courteous manner; informs, guides, directs or otherwise assists residents, visitors, staff, or vendors respectfully and congenially to protect and present the best possible image of Caltech. Assisting with daily door monitoring checks; maintains departmental emergency equipment and supplies to ensure proper functioning; ensures compliance with policies and procedures. Reporting all discrepancies and unsafe conditions. Working in a patrol or support function. Emergency Medical Technician Function The SRO/EMT is the highest trained medical response officer within the Campus Security Department. While working in the capacity of an Emergency Medical Technician, the SRO is responsible for responding immediately to all emergency situations. Practices proper First Responder protocols and life safety policies and procedures. Assists the CARE Team and other health professionals with Students/Staff of Concern. Assists with random mock testing and training of staff to ensure emergency preparedness. The SRO will be assigned to all on-campus events to provide medical assistance as needed. *Shift rotation and days off vary according to assignment with occasional mandatory overtime required. Essential Job Duties The following statements are the essential functions to be performed by an individual assigned to this job. Must be able to: Communicate in a courteous, effective, and professional manner in-person, by telephone, two-way radio, and electronic media. Respond to requests for assistance. Respond to emergency calls, fire alarms, intrusion alarms on campus. Conduct health and safety checks as required. Prepare a daily log of shift activities and write incident reports. Work closely with local police and fire agencies. Represent the Institute in its relationships with the community, government agencies, professional societies, and other groups. Ability to testify in court. Stay current with best practices in campus safety/security and campus community-oriented policing strategies. Stay current with the best practices in first responder strategies. Participate in crime analysis and prepare crime data. Perform miscellaneous duties as requested. Basic Qualifications Must possess and maintain a current State Certified Emergency Medical Technician License. Must possess and maintain a valid California BSIS guard card. Must possess a California driver's license (with a clean driving record) and be able to be qualified as an Institute's Caltech designated driver (subject to the specific requirements approved by the Institute's insurance carrier). Analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in collecting and reviewing simple and complex data, drawing valid conclusions, and making effective decisions. Ability to prioritize work assignments. Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Excellent computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, internet, email applications, Microsoft office suite and databases. Must exhibit excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must be able to compose and comprehend written reports. Physical Requirements Standing at times for prolonged periods, walking, reaching, climbing, lifting 50 lbs. or more, carrying, writing, pushing, pulling, hearing, squatting/kneeling, driving, speaking, seeing, and restraining suspects. Must be able to walk Campus properties. May be exposed to noise, chemicals, heat/cold, carcinogens, fumes/gases, dirt, and human tissue/fluids, extreme weather, and temperatures. Irregular work schedule, multiple concurrent tasks, frequent interruptions, detailed work, frequent deadlines, periods of concentrated attention, and frequent contact and interaction with people. Preferred Qualifications Valid certification and comprehensive knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act. Possess a current California Basic POST Certificate, or its equivalent from an accredited state agency. Previous related experience in municipal law enforcement or campus law enforcement. A minimum of 60-semester units from a regionally accredited college/university, in a related field. Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and VAWA. Required Documents Resume.
