Job Description
The Director of Orientation and Registration is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing on-campus and virtual orientation and registration programming, in close collaboration with Advising and Student Transitions, Admissions, Center for International Studies, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Business Services. The programs and events include, but are not limited to, Advising and Registration Events (on-campus, off-campus at community colleges, and virtual), Placement Testing, Drop-in Advising, Extended Hours Advising/Registration, Huskies-First-Four new student orientation in Fall and Spring, along with new initiatives or priorities that extend and enhance Huskies First Four to promote students? sense of belonging.
Leading professional staff (Coordinator of Orientation and Coordinator of Placement Testing) and student employees (e.g., office student workers and up to 50 student orientation leaders), and staff volunteers, the Director is responsible for increasing enrollment, retention, and student success by ensuring that students have an excellent orientation and first-year experience and that admitted students are advised and registered timely to meet university?s enrollment goals. The successful Director will apply expert knowledge and skills to policies, procedures, and practices in functional areas, manage multiple work plans with high complexity, develop and oversee budgets, and positively impact the mission of University College and Strategic Enrollment Management.
Responsibilities
Orientation and First-Year Experience Planning and Execution
- Apply principles of student development, policies, and best practices to orientation and first-year experience programming.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute programming of orientation (including New Huskies Convocation) and first-year experience events in varied modalities, utilizing communication and technological platforms such as Liaison, EAB Navigate, or D2L (an LMS).
- Communicate and collaborate with offices offering additional orientation programming such as Center for International Studies and Graduate Studies.
- Identify goals and objectives of Huskies First Four programming, develop methods for assessing events and programs, analyze data, and make specific changes to structures and/or processes in order to address barriers and improve student experience.
- Collaborate with campus partners to plan and execute programming, for example, Admissions, Provost Council, SEM Leadership Team (Strategic Enrollment Management), Records and Registration, Center for International Studies, Honors College, Career Center, Office of Institutional Equity and Access, etc.
- Provide work direction to and oversight of the orientation coordinator, graduate assistant(s), and student employees.
- Hire, train and oversee orientation student leaders to support programming; develop and maintain a commitment to an excellent peer orientation experience, as well as the development of orientation leaders? professional and leadership skills.
- Hire, train and oversee the orientation Graduate Assistant(s), ensuring opportunities for graduate students to meet learning outcomes and participate in and execute a broad range of services.

Advising, Registration and Placement Testing Event Planning and Execution. (e.g., A&R Events, Drop-in Advising, Extended Hours Advising and Registration, Placement Testing)
- Apply knowledge of principles, policies, and best practices in placement testing, advising and registration to develop goals, objectives of advising and registration events, develop methods for assessing events and programs, analyze data, and make specific changes to structures or processes in order to address barriers and improve service to students.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute placement testing, advising and registration events on campus, virtually, or off-campus at partnering colleges.
- Communicate, cultivate relationship, and collaborate with Admissions, Academic Affairs (deans, faculty and academic staff) and colleagues at community colleges in order to coordinate, promote, market, and implement advising and registration events (e.g., A&R, drop-on advising, extended hours, and/or joint advising events on community colleges).
- Provide work direction to and oversight of the placement testing coordinator, graduate assistant, and student employees, to meet learning outcomes and execute programs and events.
- Lend support and assistance to Admissions for recruitment events such as Red and Black Days and Admitted Student Days.
- Plan, manage and monitor the budgets associated with advising, registration, and placement testing.

Marketing and Communications
- In partnership with Admissions and campus partners (to include, but not limited to Center for International Studies, Multicultural Student Services, Athletics, and the Honors program) and partners at other System schools, develop and execute communication plans and marketing plans for admitted students, programming pertinent to orientation, first-year experience, advising, registration, placement testing and foster students? sense of belonging.
- Direct office marketing efforts and activities related to advising, orientation, First 4 experience, placement testing, including but not limited to, website content, print materials and social media platforms.
Additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Master?s Degree
- 3 years of professional higher education experience in Admissions, Advising, Orientation, or Enrollment Management.
- Advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in principles, policies, practices related to student development, student service, and/or student success.
- Proficiency with commonly used Microsoft 365 applications and general experience and adaptability with learning new technology.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural competence.
- Ability to interact with multiple and diverse groups of people and a commitment to integrating equity and inclusion principles in policies, processes, and operations.
Preferred Qualification
- 1 year of experience in event planning and execution, orientation programming, first-year experience programming (especially in fostering students? sense of belonging), or placement testing.
- Experience with an online learning management platform (e.g., D2L), student data systems, Student Success Platform (e.g., EAB Navigate), and/or communication systems.
- Experience with recruiting, training and oversight of staff and/or student employees.
