What You Will Do R&D Manager 3 ($146,800 - $254,700)
A Deputy Group Leader (DGL) in Materials Science Technology (MST-7) assists with the tactical and strategic planning for the Group, ensuring that mission needs and programmatic deliverables are met today and into the future. The successful DGL will:

  • Maintain employee teambuilding and mentoring to enhance capability, development and integration for "Engineered Materials".
  • Develop the team without compromising the interpersonal relationships of group members.
  • Support stewardship of the Group's funding base and business management.
  • Develop, collaborative partnerships with programmatic and line organizations both within LANL and across the DOE complex - especially with the Experimental Science and Weapons Manufacturing Directorates.
  • Ensure adherence to Safe Conduct of Operations, maintaining safe and secure work spaces, and ethical work practices while remaining agile and adaptable to new challenges and change.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing tactical drivers, regulations, and work conditions while enabling production of quality results and mission advancement.

Leadership and Management
Experience in a management position, with a proven ability to effectively lead teams, manage, and develop employees.

Teambuilding
Previous experience in building and leading teams, mentoring and motivating employees, and working effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel to gain consensus and resolve conflicts.
Experience with staff planning, recruiting, and professional development of employees.

Safety and Security
Working knowledge of operational rigor needed to maintain safe, secure, and regulatory compliant operations within a dynamic laboratory environment.
Experience operating or managing in facilities that have chemical and/or radiological hazards and/or limited security areas.
Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Communication
Demonstrated ability to communicate to personnel at all levels, with an emphasis on experience coordinating efforts in cross-organizational collaboration projects.

Technical
Advanced record of technical leadership and management including technical decision making and goal setting. Demonstrated technical accomplishments through publications and reports, presentations at national and international meetings, engagement in sponsor meetings or workshops, and/or leadership of large projects, in one or more of the areas relevant to the group's activities.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in science or engineering and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Active "Q" clearance.
  • Experience working in both R&D and manufacturing environments, highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of national laboratory policies in integrated work management, safety, security, quality, environment, finance, and human resources.
  • Experience or previous involvement in weapons programs, experimental sciences, LDRD research, computational methods, and other Stockpile Stewardship projects.
  • Experience securing funding for federal projects and the ability to obtain 50% funding for technical work relating to MST-7.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
