POSITION SUMMARY:
Manages all activities and personnel associated with the Animal Facility including animal care, budgeting, infrastructure, medications, and student and faculty training. The Manager of Animal Facilities plays an important role in understanding and implementing the federal regulations for the care and use of animals in research. Supervises FT Animal Care Technicians (2). The Manager reports to the Senior Director of Sponsored Research & Compliance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages daily animal husbandry of the animal care program; provides supervision of routine animal care.
Provides procurement and receipt of animals, equipment, supplies, and services. Develops and maintains the operating budget for the facility. Approves all expenses.
Supervises FT Animal Care Technicians.
Develops, implements and updates policies and standard operating procedures for the facility.
Coordinates training for animal care staff, students, and researchers; serves as a liaison between personnel and animal care staff; ensures adherence to appropriate federal and university guidelines, policies, and regulations.
Prepares annual reports for the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW); maintains facility records.
Provides support to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including inspections, protocol review and adherence. Assists in IACUC training.
Completes other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Science or related field, from an accredited institution.
AALAS Level 1 - 2 Technician Certification is required.
Three to five years of experience in animal care, primarily rodents, is required.
Preferred qualifications:
Previous lab management is desired, but not required.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.
General knowledge of principles and acceptable practices involved with animal research and animal welfare, or any combination of experience or training which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to:
Strong knowledge of animal husbandry.
Knowledge of federal regulations for the care and use of animals in research.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency of basic managerial skills, including organizational and problem- solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work independently, as well as with researchers, students, vendors, and administrators.
