The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering is one of the largest at Miami University. It offers undergraduate Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science, cybersecurity, and software engineering as well as a Bachelor of Arts in computer science. Bachelor of Science degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing are in development and are expected to be online in the Fall of 2025. The Department currently offers two graduate degrees. These include a research focused Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) degree and a professional Master of Computer Science (MSC) degree. A pathway to a Ph.D. in Computer Science is offered in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati. A separate Ph.D. in Computer Science degree program is currently being developed within the department with the support of the university administration. The total number of undergraduate majors is approximately 800. Approximately 55 students are enrolled in the growing research focused MSCS program. Enrollment in the new MCS program is approximately 25. The Department takes pride in offering smaller classes and the average class size is typically near 30. The faculty currently comprises 35 full-time individuals. The CSE student major to faculty ratio is less than 25. In January of 2025, CSE  moved into the new cutting edge McVey Data Science Building along with the Department of Emerging Technology in Business and Design (ETBD) and the Department of Statistics which offers degrees in Data Science and Data Analytics.

Required: Doctorate in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, cybersecurity or a closely related field (ABD candidates are welcome to apply but all degree requirements must be completed by date of appointment). Doctorate is required by December 31, 2025 for appointment to a second year. Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor requires an established record of high-quality teaching and scholarship/research with a strong prospect for continuation. Ability to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Consideration will be given to candidates with a record of published research/scholarship in computer science, software engineering, cybersecurity, and/or experience teaching in higher education. Areas of particular interest include: software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and parallel and distributed computing.
