Job Summary

We are seeking a Research Scientist to develop, test, and implement turbulence, convection, and cloud parameterizations in the CliMA atmosphere model and calibrate them with observations. As a CliMA Research Scientist at Caltech, you will collaborate with a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team of curious and creative scientists and engineers to create the first atmosphere model that is designed to learn automatically from diverse data. (Information on CliMA: https://clima.caltech.edu/ .)

Essential Job Duties

The successful candidate will advance the state of knowledge and contribute to the development of a data-informed atmosphere model in one or more of several possible ways:

  • Use your expertise in atmosphere dynamics to develop models to represent the dynamics of turbulence, convection, and clouds in an atmosphere model.
  • Implement physically informed parameterizations of turbulence, convection, and clouds and calibrate them with data assimilation/machine learning approaches using diverse data, including large-eddy simulations and Earth observations.
  • Investigate and iteratively improve the performance of the models in their ability to faithfully simulate Earth's observed climate and assess their effect on climate change scenarios.
  • Publish original research arising from this work using the CliMA atmosphere model.

Basic Qualifications
  • Completed a PhD in a field of science, mathematics, or engineering.
  • Experience working with climate models.
