Description: Position Summary The Department of Physiology and Biophysics invites applications for non-tenured faculty at the rank of clinical assistant, associate, or professor with expertise in teaching the basic principles of physiology and pathophysiology required for the clinical practice of medicine. We seek an innovative, energetic, experienced educator who will develop curriculum, teach, and assess within the College of Medicine, primarily students in Phase 1, the first 19 months of medical school. They may also be involved with more senior students for revisitation of basic science content. This position will collaborate with excellent clinical and basic science educators in physiology and related disciplines on the Rockford, Peoria, and Chicago campuses and may serve as a course director for an integrated organ segment block. This 12-month, full-time faculty position will function as the departmental resource on medical student education and will report directly to the head of physiology and biophysics and indirectly to the assistant dean for Phase 1 curriculum within the College of Medicine. This job description reflects the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Duties & Responsibilities Developing teaching material for medical physiology and pathophysiology content that incorporates clinically relevant principles. Must be able to teach all organ systems at a level relevant to M1 and M2 students. Teaching using multiple methods of pedagogy, including case-based instruction, large- and small-group discussion, lecture, demonstration, simulation, and team-based learning. Using the optimal instructional techniques for content delivery in person and online, including educational modules, video, virtual reality, gamification etc. Co-directing integrated basic science modules with clinical faculty. Working collaboratively with faculty from other basic science/clinical science departments and campuses to implement curriculum, including course schedules, materials, and exams. Participating in the physiology discipline team to create new content and revise content to optimize learning outcomes. Serve as a director for an integrated medical school pre-clinical course on either the local or college-wide level as assigned. Responding to student and peer evaluations of individual teaching and course content and participating in the creation of course reports as part of continuous quality improvement. Developing various formative and summative assessment tools, including NBME-style multiple-choice questions. Participating in faculty development programs to enhance the teaching and educational skills of faculty within and outside the department. Where appropriate, the ideal candidate may lead faculty development activities. Engaging in scholarship related to the medical education focus of the department and academic-related service. Providing relevant academic service on local and college-wide committees. Participate in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics faculty meetings and serve on the graduate education committee to provide input on medical physiology for master's students preparing for medical school. Contribute to course planning by the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in support of a master's program for premedical students. Teaching to premedical students if the schedule and timing allow it. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. OR MD/DO or its foreign equivalent. Previous experience in teaching collegiate/medical school physiology or related courses with evidence of strong educational effectiveness Strong verbal and written communication skills Collaborative team player with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting. Familiarity with or willingness to learn about instructional technologies including Box, Google suite, Microsoft, Zoom, and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard). A demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. Preferred Qualifications Terminal degree in Physiology or related field Experience with administrative responsibilities in an educational or clinical setting Demonstrated relevant educational scholarship Knowledge or experience with LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) requirements Previous experience as a course director.
