Job Summary and Qualifications
Job Summary:
The Process Engineering (PE) department exists to instill a culture of continuous improvement cross the HCA enterprise. The department uses industry-recognizable methodologies for process engineering and improvement, specifically: Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, and process automation to increase efficiency and improve quality. These methodologies focus on voice of customer and statistical analysis of data in order to remove waste and variation in processes, which:
- Improves patient and/or customer experience
- Increases revenue and capacity
- Reduces errors and expenses
Operating with a Consultancy and an Institute, the Process Engineering department functions as a Center of Excellence (CoE) for process engineering at HCA, owns the above methodologies, and consults across the enterprise in order to:
- Drive and create a culture of continuous improvement
- Improve quality across the enterprise
- Operate an elite, graduate-level Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification program
- Conserve valuable HCA resources by identifying and implementing efficiency opportunities in work processes
- Support other HCA groups/organizations in execution of the company’s strategic goals
The department has established and operates a partnership with the Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business and the Center for Executive Education at Belmont University, which is the only partnership between a Fortune 100 company and a graduate education program in the United States. This partnership provides accreditation for the graduate-level Lean Six Sigma certifications at Green Belt (intermediate) Black Belt (advanced) and Master Black Belt (expert) levels. Attaining certification requires candidates to qualify, attend class, pass a test, and execute projects, including submitting relevant deliverables, which collectively takes about one year.
Process engineers operating within the department are dedicated process improvement professionals who specialize in applying LSS concepts across the matrixed HCA Healthcare enterprise. Successful Process Engineers combine their expertise in LSS, statistical data analysis, project management, business analysis, and mass- and direct-communication to both execute projects and equip others to be successful with their own projects. They must manage their time well and transition seamlessly between leading others, executing projects, and completing operational tasks. The candidate should have the following skillsets and abilities:
- Effective communication
- Interpreting and communicating technical and statistical information to both individuals and groups in a clear, concise manner
- Communicating well with all levels of the organization, including to senior executives
- Presenting to various audiences (1:1, group meetings, classes)
- Project management and executing consulting engagements
- Directly managing and executing complex, enterprise-scale process improvement initiatives on behalf of executive stakeholders (consulting engagement model for the Process Engineering Consultancy)
- Shepherding projects through the discovery, prioritization and executive governance process o Leading and planning complex, multi-day rapid improvement sessions for executives and stakeholders (Kaizen events)
- Pursuing process automation opportunities as part of process re-engineering and improvement
- Developing complex communication plans regarding enterprise consulting engagements
- Effectively communicating operational or project progress against strategic goals to senior executive sponsors and stakeholders
- Leading and teaching others across the enterprise (outside department and organization, as a part of the Process Engineering Institute)
- Educating, equipping and supporting ~1000 colleagues across the enterprise to attain their LSS certifications and complete process improvement projects where they work
- Establishing and leading satellite process improvement and automation programs across the enterprise
- Demonstrating LSS expertise
- Maintaining or advancing LSS certification level: Green Belt (GB), Black Belt (BB), or Master Black Belt (MBB)
- Designing curricula and content for graduate-level GB, BB, and MBB classes
- Leveraging advanced statistical tools for data analysis
- Understanding and visualizing processes for executive and stakeholder consumption
- Business analysis: Consuming and understanding complex business models and organizations that are unfamiliar and may not have previously been encountered
- Articulating automation use cases, determining relevant application, and understanding process readiness for automation
- Technical skills
- Leveraging tools to collect, extract, process and visualize data
- Applying advanced technology and tools in the development of solutions for complex problems for application systems, including design, development, testing and maintenance of enterprise applications using SharePoint and SQL technologies
- Utilizing data visualization and processing tools such as Power BI, Minitab, and Excel
- Functioning as a Scrum Master for complex, enterprise level process improvements and for assigned projects executed by those in the LSS community
LSS enterprise program management, marketing and mass communication for the Process Engineering Institute
- Communicating effectively across multiple levels of the organization (oral and written)
- Planning, leading, and facilitating events for 50 to 300 participants
- Developing complex communication plans regarding enterprise training, including application requirements and steps, executive approvals, and course information
- Promoting the enterprise LSS program using multiple types of media
- Effectively communicating LSS community progress and success against strategic goals to senior executive sponsors and stakeholders o Engaging the ~1000 LSS community members across the enterprise to maintain the continuous improvement mindset and program momentum

- Executes complex communication plans to ensure clear, concise, and relevant communications with executive sponsors and stakeholders at all times
- Adjusts communication style to the audience and depending on frequently changing circumstances to influence, manage and negotiate with stakeholders to achieve goals
- Elicits and encourages cooperation and collaboration from a wide variety of stakeholders
- Leverages communication and empathy to understand and diffuse tension and/or miscommunication between stakeholders that could prevent progress toward achievement of goals
- Translates technical concepts and statistical details to effectively communicate analysis to executive sponsors and stakeholders in order to guide decision-making
- Clearly communicates progress for all areas of enterprise LSS program including but not limited to member statuses, training, advising, project status, project completion and success, and program and project benefits to executive sponsors and stakeholders using various media and forums as appropriate; articulates success against goals
- Communicates effectively to inspire teams, set direction and approach, resolve conflict, and deliver tough messages with grace when needed
- Exhibits strong analytical, written, and presentation skills with an ability to interpret and communicate technical and statistical information in a concise manner that is easily consumed by executive sponsors and stakeholders
Project management and executing consulting engagements for the Process Engineering Consultancy
- Executes GB (intermediate level) and supports large-scale, complex BB (advanced level) projects, strategic initiatives, and consulting engagements involving cross-functional teams, multiple internal and external constituents and matrix partners, as assigned
- Identifies knowledge gap spaces where external subject matter experts (SMEs) are needed for project execution
- Understands the objectives and scope of the project; estimates needs, duration, and scale; identifies necessary project resources
- Identifies risks to project completion
- Plans, facilitates, and supports large (25 or more participants) Kaizen sessions (multi-day rapid improvement events), with custom-designed activities to achieve objectives on behalf of SVP, VP, CIO, COO, CFO, AVP- level company leaders and other stakeholders/participants
- Facilitates execution of the multi-day strategic Kaizen event that includes SVP, VP, CIO, COO, CFO, AVP- level company leaders and other stakeholders completing activities toward achieving defined objectives
- Executes quantitative and qualitative data analysis including leveraging data, data sets and data analytics tools such as Excel, Minitab, and Power BI to evaluate data against strategic company goals and demonstrate process and efficiency improvements
- Translates data and statistical information into meaningful context for executives and stakeholders to guide business decisions
- Facilitates data collection strategy to meet project goals and objectives and establish ROI
- Proposes projects and initiatives for approval
- Facilitates project proposals; understands and includes high-level requirements; offers recommendations and solutions to achieve business goals
- Supports a cross-functional team to conduct process studies / audits; conducts studies in business process reengineering and system redesign, improvement and management; facilitates pilot and implementation plans; and supports the implementation of improvements
- Executes process improvement and design initiatives aimed at improving the customer experience, reducing errors, reducing expenses, increasing revenues and creating capacity
- Has a proven ability to build positive relationships with executive sponsors, stakeholders, subject matter experts, and the LSS project team
- Serves as primary point of contact for all assigned project efforts; routinely briefs key stakeholders on different aspects of assigned initiatives; represents the project(s) in various project governance and inter[1]department forums
- Develops project charters, communication plans, and measurement collection plans to ensure successful project execution; ensures processes are mapped accurately and data is collected then analyzed; draws conclusions from data and documentation; reports findings to executive sponsors and stakeholders; creates improvement solutions to resolve issues; ensures control plans are in place and processes are documented for the process owner; defines and tracks project milestones related to the above activities
- Removes barriers to enable teams to complete their objectives
Leading and facilitating across the enterprise: leads others in learning and applying LSS and other process engineering methodologies for both the Process Engineering Consultancy and the Process Engineering Institute
- Advises GB candidates on their projects as assigned, including hosting team or 1:1 recurring touchpoints, coaching, reviewing deliverables, offering process engineering methodology insights, and helping ensure project success
- Leads and facilitates sections of GB courses as assigned; leads group activities and serves as subject matter expert as needed
- Collaborates with others to design graduate-level training curricula, incorporating appropriate pedagogy for leaders and individual contributors as assigned for GB, BB, automation, or other process methodologies as requested
- Reviews GB project deliverables to ensure quality project execution and verifies certification requirements are met
- Collaborates with executive program sponsors and other leaders to assess their continuous improvement and change maturity culture
- Executes strategies to improve targeted KPIs and drive operational efficiency
- Educates colleagues regarding the capabilities and benefits of process improvement and continuous performance management
Demonstrating LSS expertise
- Applies Lean Six Sigma methodology expertise to create solutions that improve quality, increase efficiency, and reduce expenses and/or generate revenue and cost savings to achieve company and department goals and objectives for the benefit of patients, providers, clinicians, colleagues, and the company
- Maintains LSS GB (intermediate) and attains BB (advanced) certification; recertifies annually
- Identifies automation opportunities and facilitates cooperation with Automation Center of Excellence (ACoE) for participants seeking certification and/or automation solutions for enterprise projects and consulting engagements
- Develops colleagues' expertise as an expert in the LSS methodology
- Demonstrates an aptitude for problem solving and critical thinking, leverages process engineering and quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills; identifies problems and both contributes to creative resolutions as well as collaborates with others toward resolution, creative problem solving, and solution implementation
- Facilitates change management efforts when proposing recommendations and/or improvements to executive sponsors and stakeholders and also when implementing improved processes with teams and groups impacted by changes; demonstrates understanding and empathy and leverages change management best practices to facilitate successful change across cross-functional teams and with matrix partners
- Identifies opportunities where problems have been solved in one area of the company and recognizes the same or similar solutions could be applied in various areas across the enterprise; facilitates the effort to replicate success
- Applies Theory of Constraints methodologies and steps to quickly increase process throughput and reduce backlogs or operating expenses; recognizes constraints in processes and workflows and corrects the most egregious issues to improve flow
- Understands and leverages process engineering methodology-specific tools including but not limited to FMEA, Ishikawa diagrams and the like
- Diagrams processes by eliciting from executive sponsors, stakeholders, and delegates the current steps and translating them into a visual representation of the process; executes Gemba walks to obtain first-hand knowledge of processes and documents accordingly; conceptualizes future state processes and depicts ideas in a map that is easily understood by executive sponsors and stakeholders
- Effectively navigates a complex, matrixed organization with varying levels of leadership engagement
Technical skills: Utilizes technical skills to fulfill department goals and objectives
- Automation
- Identifies process mining opportunities, goals, objectives, and benefits
- Maps out automation changes to workflow using toolsets such as Visio and collaborates with technology teams and leadership teams on larger scale efforts
- Documents technical systems, workflows, and application details and requirements to enable support and provide historical record for department technologies
- Leverages tools such as Power BI, Excel, and/or Minitab to aggregate, analyze, and/or present data
LSS enterprise program management, marketing and mass communications for the Process Engineering Institute
- Ensures all necessary logistics are completed including processing applications, obtaining executive approvals, securing physical reservations and facilitation resources, and communicating with applicants, leveraging Lean Six Sigma Central (internally developed application for tracking and managing LSS certification candidates and project deliverables) as the system of record
- Understands enterprise-wide LSS program KPIs and works with leadership to identify areas of improvement
- Ensures relevant data is captured to guarantee the accuracy, quality and completion of reporting
- Verifies the submission and accuracy of required operational metrics for executive monthly operating reports (MORs) and other requested forums
- Promotes the LSS enterprise program as assigned, including but not limited to presenting to leaders and various stakeholders regarding requirements, expectations, and success stories as requested; recruits strategic candidates to join or advance their knowledge
- Implements LSS enterprise program strategies as assigned
- Develops toolkits and resources as assigned to advance the expertise and influence of the enterprise LSS community
- Collaborates with other community members who are designated LSS satellite Program and/or Automation Leads for their respective organizations; serves as Liaison to the program and the department
