Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

Cornell Wellness is a unit situated directly under the Recreational Services department umbrella, with additional dotted line reporting directly under HR's workforce wellbeing umbrella. Wellness staff are a dynamic team that as a whole provide educational opportunities to the Cornell community (staff, faculty, retirees, and their spouses/partners) that empower individuals to make healthy choices for themselves.

The Cornell Wellness Group Exercise Program offers a wide variety of movement-based Group Exercise classes that are available to everyone in the Cornell employee and retiree community (staff, faculty, retirees, and their spouses/partners) who choose to purchase a membership.

Cornell Wellness Group Fitness Instructors have the exciting job of developing and leading group exercise classes in one or more formats. At this time, Cornell Wellness is interested in candidates who can instruct one or more of the following formats: Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Circuit Strength and Balance Training, and Cardio Kickboxing or Moderate Intensity Interval Training. Classes are provided to participants ranging in age from approximately 20-85 years old, and are delivered through Zoom, in-person, or recorded methods.

Pay rate: $18- $42/hour (based on certifications, experience, and class format). This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

  • Ability to teach safe & dynamic form to multiple ages and abilities including appropriate & easy-to-follow progression of exercises, and a balanced workout via a virtual, in-person, or recorded platform.
  • Ability to adapt to cues based on the needs of class participants.
  • Ability to function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to create an inclusive, welcoming, and engaging class experience through virtual, in-person, or recorded platform.

Required Qualifications:
  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED (or equivalent).
  • Current American Red Cross Standard First Aid (or equivalent).
  • One nationally recognized fitness certification or other related fitness certification that is current (not expired). Examples include AFAA, ACE, ACSM, Spinning(r), ZUMBA(r) Fitness, 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, or other related teaching certification.
  • Proper knowledge on structure and leading a group fitness class.
  • General knowledge of current exercise recommendation principles.
  • Prior experience teaching group exercise via a virtual, in-person, or video platform.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to teach via both virtual platforms and in-person.
  • Ability to teach mornings and/or evenings.
