Dean of Natural and Social Sciences POSITION DETAILS POSITION DETAILS Located in the storied and resilient borough of The Bronx, Lehman College reflects the rich diversity that characterizes CUNY and the City of New York. The College serves more than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students across 140-degree programs, plus 13,000 students in certificate and workforce development programs. Many of the Lehman faculty are also members of the doctoral faculty at CUNY???s Graduate Center and STEM faculty mentor over 40 doctoral students in Lehman laboratories. Over fifty percent of Lehman undergrads have household incomes of less than $30,000; 80 percent are students of color; and 45 percent speak a language other than English at home. Nearly seventy percent are female and the median age is 25. The National Bureau of Economic Research and the Equality of Opportunity Project recently ranked Lehman as third in the nation for its role in moving large numbers of low-income students into the middle class and beyond. Among Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), the American Council on Education (ACE) has ranked Lehman as No. 1 in the nation for upward mobility. We are also one of only four public colleges in the nation that belong in the top 25 of ???low-debt/high-income schools.??? Lehman has set its sights on becoming the top contributor to educational attainment in the Bronx and on recovering from the difficulties of the pandemic. To do so, we are relying on data analytics to inform student advising, strategically addressing bottlenecks, implementing course redesign using technology, implementing experiential learning projects, frictionless transfer pathways, and public-private partnerships, and leveraging operational efficiencies to expand access to services that promote mental health and wellness, and emergency grants and services to help deal with housing and food insecurity, both of which are growing challenges at Lehman and other campuses across the state and country. The College intends to enhance its research infrastructure with the long-term goal of being recognized with the Carnegie designation of R2. Lehman???s core value of social justice underscores our aspiration to develop research that benefits the health and wellness of the citizens of the Bronx and beyond, ??? from bench to bedside???. The Dean provides the academic and administrative leadership for the undergraduate and graduate programs of the ten academic departments within the School of Natural and Social Sciences (NSS): Anthropology; Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth, Environmental and Geospatial Sciences; Mathematics; Physics and Astronomy; Political Science; Psychology, and Sociology. The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success and serves on the Extended Cabinet of the President and a member of the Provost's and Deans' Council, through which the Dean participates in the formulation, evaluation, and administration of College policy and the advancement of the College's strategic priorities. The Dean will: ??? Provide visionary and strategic leadership for the School of Natural and Social Sciences ??? Advance faculty recruitment, high quality teaching, faculty research, professional development and mentoring from the point of hire through the tenure and promotion process. ??? Support department chairs by fostering innovative, best practices focused on mission refinement, articulation of scholarship expectations, and enhancement of student success strategies across the school. ??? Foster academic planning and innovative curricular development. ??? Encourage research grants; expand revenue streams and public/private partnerships. ??? Ensure effective management of financial resources including budget planning and management. ??? Chair monthly meetings of the School Executive Committee and communicate regularly with department chairs and school faculty and staff. ??? Strengthen partnerships with schools, corporations, and various institutions and organizations to stimulate new areas of research and scientific discovery to enhance the profile of Lehman College as a center of excellence in the natural sciences and social sciences. ??? Develop a plan in collaboration with the Division of Institutional Advancement and with input from NSS faculty to enhance engagement with alumni, and secure funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations in support of core strategic initiatives to advance the work of all NSS departments. ??? Provide leadership in the development of inter-professional education and practice. ??? Collaborate closely with the vice president of enrollment management, vice president of student affairs, and other school deans to advance college strategic initiatives and student success. ??? Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College. An earned doctorate in one of the disciplines within the School; a record of academic achievement in the discipline meriting appointment as a tenured full Professor; University teaching experience complemented by a superior research and scholarly record; a record of proven leadership and administrative experience related to the work of the School (service as a departmental chair or equivalent preferred); demonstrated engagement with and success in obtaining federal, state and private grants; experience in fiscal affairs, faculty and staff development, and promoting university and community relations; and evidence of a strong commitment to the goals of urban, public higher education serving diverse populations. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, innovative, and proven academic leader who is able to work collaboratively with faculty and staff on the development of a shared vision across a wide range of academic disciplines. CUNY TITLE Dean COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Salary range: $170,00-$195,000 CUNY's benefits contribute significantly to total compensation, supporting health and wellness, financial well-being, and professional development.
