Senior Laboratory Technician - Military Veterans

Senior Laboratory Technician to assist Laboratory Coordinators in the College of Biological Sciences Instructional Labs, splitting time between the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses. This person will be responsible for preparing media and reagents for lab classes offered by the College of Biological Sciences. This person must be able to prioritize tasks and complete them in a timely fashion, so they are ready for class. Need a team player who is willing to help where needed. Great organization and communication skills are needed to manage tasks on both Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses."

80% Preparation of media and reagents for classes, including pouring plates, and managing the plate pouring machine. Lab coordinators will submit requests for classes; accurate calculations and measurement of weights and volumes; use of appropriate chemicals, reagents, media, and materials; proper use of equipment such as pH meters, autoclaves, and balances; supervision of student lab attendants; proper use of safety precautions; dishwashing. Preparation of orders for supplies based on class needs and anticipating future needs. Good record keeping is extremely important. Strong chemistry background is necessary. Communication is key for the person in this position. You will be working with many different people.

10% Organization of preparation area. Includes arrangement of chemicals, materials, and prepared reagents and media such that others can use the facility easily in absence of lab tech; identification of chemicals and materials to be ordered; ordering needed supplies and chemicals; maintain clean prep area; use of computer to keep updated list of chemicals and materials; organization and filing of recipes and media and reagent request lists.

5% Laboratory set-up and clean-up. Includes moving, arrangement, and re-storage of materials; proper storage or disposal of leftover reagents and media; disposal of contaminated materials or animal waste; clean-up of equipment, glassware, benches; proper disposal of hazardous wastes according to University Waste Program guidelines.

5% Assistance to other personnel as needed and other duties as assigned to allow efficient functioning of the instructional labs. May involve some work with fish, insects and other invertebrates as needed.

The hourly rate for this position is $23.96.

Essential Qualifications High school graduation or the equivalent with some science courses and two years of experience in relevant academic and work experience may be substituted. Accuracy and timeliness are required components of duties.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in science with emphasis on making media and reagents or equivalent education and work experience relevant to job duties totaling 2 years. Good organizational and communications skills, good record keeping, ability to work with a wide variety of people, and good problem-solving skills. Experience in instructional labs is an added bonus. Expect a team player. Strong chemistry background is necessary.
