Data Center Technician - Military Veterans

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Data Center Technician, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the electrical and cooling infrastructure within our data center. You will work closely with the Site Reliability Engineering infrastructure and network team members to ensure the reliability, efficiency, and security of our data center operations. This role requires a deep understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, and cooling technologies.

The Data Center Technician is the subject matter expert for all on-premise data center operations & safety requirements. This professional plays a vital role for the organization’s scalability planning when considering physical, electrical, and cooling capacity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Electrical System Design and Implementation:

  • Design and implement electrical systems to support data center operations, including Power Distribution Units (PDUs), Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and related infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain detailed electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Ensure all electrical installations meet industry standards and comply with local regulations and safety codes.

Cooling System Design and Implementation:

  • Plan and manage the installation, configuration, and maintenance of cooling systems, such as Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC) and other HVAC systems.
  • Optimize cooling solutions to ensure efficient temperature control and humidity management.
  • Conduct regular performance assessments and adjustments to cooling systems to maintain optimal environmental conditions.

System Monitoring and Maintenance:

  • Monitor and analyze electrical and cooling systems to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Implement preventive maintenance schedules for all electrical and cooling equipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections and testing of UPS systems, PDUs, and cooling units to ensure reliability and prevent potential failures.

Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to power distribution, UPS, and cooling systems in a timely manner.
  • Provide rapid response to data center emergencies, including power outages and cooling failures.
  • Collaborate with other technical teams to address and resolve complex infrastructure issues.

Vendor and Contractor Coordination:

  • Collaborate with vendors and contractors for the installation, repair, and upgrade of electrical and cooling equipment.
  • Manage relationships with external service providers to ensure high-quality and timely support.
  • Oversee and inspect work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed documentation of electrical and cooling infrastructure, including schematics, diagrams, and maintenance records.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on system performance, maintenance activities, and incidents.
  • Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for electrical and cooling operations.

Planning and Capacity Management:

  • Assist in the planning and execution of data center expansions and upgrades, ensuring proper power and cooling capacity.
  • Conduct capacity planning assessments to forecast future power and cooling needs.
  • Recommend and implement solutions to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to industry standards and best practices for electrical safety and cooling efficiency.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Participate in safety training and drills to maintain a safe working environment.

On-Call Support:

  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to data center emergencies as needed.
  • Provide after-hours support for critical incidents and maintenance activities.

REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent; associate's or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years working experience with infrastructure projects, demonstrating expertise in a wide range of components such as Servers, Networking Equipment, Storage Devices, Operating Systems, Databases, Data Centers, Security, and Backup/DR.
  • Experienced in the SRE department for over 3 years, demonstrating a strong understanding of SRE services and processes across all teams.
