at Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM)
Job Summary:
Performs various carpentry tasks for the modification, repair, and maintenance of Exchange buildings, including constructing structures like snack bars and furniture such as closets and benches.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receives assignments from a supervisor via work orders, drawings, or sketches, completing them with limited guidance while adhering to standards.
- Plans and executes work based on blueprints and personal knowledge, selecting materials and cutting them to specifications.
- Installs structural components (rafters, studs, window frames) using techniques such as nailing, bolting, and gluing.
- Finishes surfaces as needed, ensuring all components are level and aligned.
- Uses hand and power tools effectively.
- Performs additional related tasks as assigned.
Physical Effort:
Requires standing, bending, and working in awkward positions; may lift items up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions:
Work takes place indoors and outdoors, typically in well-ventilated areas. Exposure to noise, dust, and risk of injuries from heavy lifting, hand tools, and power tools is common.
Requirements
GENERAL EXPERIENCE One year of carpentry experience, including measuring, cutting, nailing, bolting, doweling, gluing, planning, sanding, drilling, and finishing materials using various tools.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE One year of high school can substitute for three months of general experience, up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE Five years in carpentry performing modifications and repairs per work orders, sketches, or blueprints. Experience includes repairing and installing structural items (rafters, door/window frames, trim), maintaining buildings, and constructing retail/service areas (closets, benches, tables).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb in various positions, including scaffolds and ladders. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) is the headquarters for the worldwide NEXCOM Enterprise and is one of 11 commands under the Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

NEXCOM oversees six primary business programs:
- Navy Exchange (NEX) Retail Stores and Services
- NEXCOM Hospitality Group
- Uniform Program Management Office (UPMO)
- Navy Clothing Textile and Research Facility (NCTRF)
- Ships Stores Program
- Telecommunications Program Office (TPO)
With the exception of the Ships Store Program, the NEXCOM Enterprise conducts its operations as a federal non-appropriated funded instrumentality. As such, the command is self-supporting with 70 percent of its profits given to Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs and the remaining 30 percent reinvested in NEX buildings and equipment.
NEXCOM is a military organization and is subject to congressional legislation as well as oversight from the Department of the Navy. NEXCOM’s parent command is the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).
The NEXCOM Enterprise boasts over 14,000 civilian associates in a wide variety of jobs worldwide, over 40 percent of whom are military affiliated as either family members or veterans. The bulk of NEXCOM’s workforce is comprised of government non-appropriated civilians, many of whom are also military affiliated as either family members or veterans. This combination of military leadership and civilian business expertise enables NEXCOM to perform its unique mission for the Navy.
