Accounting Officer (2 Positions) - Military Veterans

Job Description

Position Purpose

This position will provide overall budget management, accounting functions, and reporting for assigned general fund appropriations, federal, state, or private grants in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles as well as federal, state, and Minnesota State policies and regulations. Additionally, the incumbent will perform a variety of accounting related tasks as required related to financial reporting and accounts receivable functions.

Position Responsibilities

  • Perform general accounting functions related to general fund appropriations, federal, state, local or private donor grants including initiating accounting entries as necessary, providing oversight for required time and effort reporting, interpreting fund or grant guidelines, cost allocations, and preparing reports within established deadlines. This position will provide oversight to ensure that fiscal activity assigned are in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles as well as federal, state, and Minnesota State policies. This includes interpreting and providing guidance to program managers when necessary. Monitor and report the status of budgets in a timely manner. Participate as a team member in the evaluation of the grant outcomes by providing input and feedback as the financial representative of the grant team. Gather fiscal data for other College staff, external auditors, and funding entities.Â
  • Perform duties related to the accounts receivable function. This may include the referring of student debt to either the Minnesota Department of Revenue or to an external accounts receivable management firm. Answer questions regarding the status of student debt referral to other College staff, primarily the front office staff. Recall debt, as necessary. Prepare and submit bankruptcy claim information. Research student accounts when informed of bankruptcy filings so appropriate action can be taken. Provide assistance during the annual accounts receivable review and write off process.
  • Perform general accounting duties for special projects as necessary which may include such items as reconciling general ledger accounts, preparing ad hoc reports, and analyzing financial data as requested by the AVP of Finance and the Sr. Accounting Supervisor, researching revenue and expenditures for cost centers, or assisting in the preparation of financial statement work papers.Â
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties related to the operations of the Business Office. This may involve providing backup in the absence of other staff or participating in large projects so that deadlines are met.Â


Minimum Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education/training in Accounting, Finance, or field closely related to general business functions.
  • Two to five years of professional-level work experience in accounting, financial management, budgeting, or financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) sufficient to analyze, interpret, and prepare financial information, records, and reports; locate errors; and recommend solutions to procedural or other fiscal problems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to gather data and generate reports; prepare financial reports, locate errors, and recommend solutions.Â
  • Excellent customer service skills, time management, and interpersonal skills to be able to work with employees at all levels of the College.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to prepare and provide materials, and reports.


Preferred QualificationÂ
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Experience working with auditors
  • Federal grant accounting experience
