Please note that this is a 1 year limited appointment, this position will end 1 year after the start date. Involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and / or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. Engineering Technicians may be assigned duties within a single discipline (e.g., electrical) or span a range of disciplines [Note: machine specialty work in a research or lab setting is generally performed by the Lab Mechanician job titles]. The Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team. The successful candidate will join a highly skilled process development within the UCSF Investigational Cellular Therapy Group that is pushing the boundaries of medicine by developing, engineering, and manufacturing promising new cell therapy products for a variety of indications including cancer, autoimmunity, infectious disease, and inherited hematologic and immune disorders. In this role, you will play a crucial part in the development and optimization of viral and non-viral gene editing approaches. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and researchers to contribute to the advancement of cutting-edge cell-based therapies. Ability to interact with multiple facets of the cell & gene therapy industry. Mixture of didactic and hands-on training from the different groups within ICT. Some examples are as follows: Process Development & Manufacturing Aseptic technique, cell culture, cryopreservation Quality Control PCR, flow cytometry, analytical assay development Operations/Facilities Environmental monitoring, material management, facility infrastructure Quality Assurance GDP, federal regulations/requirements, industry standards, Quality Management System (QMS) Regulatory Affairs Pre-IND, IND submissions, regulatory filings Involvement in quality improvement, process development, and/or research projects Participation in journal clubs, research symposia, seminars, and retreats Presentation at relevant national/international meetings such as ISCT, ASGCT, SITC, ASTCT, or ASH for fellows and manufacturing interns Ethical training through the UCSF Broad Center Ethics mini-course, Responsible Conduct of Research Course, and Human Subjects Protection training program *Opportunities will vary depending on current projects ongoing at the facility and student interests. Process Development: Collaborate with senior team members to design and execute experiments aimed at developing and optimizing cell therapy manufacturing processes. Data Collection and Analysis: Accurately record experimental data, perform data analysis, and contribute to the interpretation of results. Present findings to the team in a clear and concise manner. Documentation: Maintain detailed and organized laboratory notebooks, draft standard operating procedures (SOPs), and contribute to the preparation of technical reports. Collaboration: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including scientists, operation, and quality control personnel, to ensure seamless communication and project progression. Quality Control: Assist in the implementation and execution of quality control procedures to ensure the consistency and reliability of cell therapy manufacturing processes. Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and standard operating procedures. This position will occasionally involve long hours and some weekends and holidays. Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions precisely are critical to success in this position. The candidate will have the opportunity to take on defined research projects within the larger group and be an author of scientific publications. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).
