General Summary

Assemble, install, inspect, maintain, and repair heating systems, piping, fixtures and equipment used in the control, distribution, and drainage of water and water-carried waste, air, gas, oil steam, acids and chemicals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair according to specifications and plumbing codes, water mains, service, sewer, air, steam and gas lines, steam traps, fire protection systems, valves, gauges, pumps and fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, dish-washers, garbage disposals, hot water tanks and water softeners.
  • Cut, thread and bend pipe by appropriate means.
  • Assemble and install pipe fittings and pipes of brass, cast iron, copper, lead, glass, plastic and other materials.
  • Join piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, bolted, fused, cemented or mechanical joints.
  • Unplug clogged drains, pipes and fixtures.
  • Cut or bore through walls, floors, ceilings or partitions.
  • Test piping systems for leaks.
  • Secure pipes to structures with clamps, brackets, hangers, fas-teners and welds.
  • Perform periodic visual inspections of equipment, components, tools, fixtures and vehicles to ensure against hazards.
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on equipment and fixtures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work and storage areas, mechanical rooms, and all tools, vehicles and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Report any damage, malfunction, irregularities and/or potential hazards in buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles and/or supplies to supervisor.
  • Operate motor vehicles.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications.
  • Use basic hand and power tools, and sewer and concrete equipment.
  • Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
  • Perform related Departmental duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to read, write, interpret instructions and perform basic arithmetic, typically acquired through the completion of a high school education, is necessary.

Documented successful completion of a Department of Labor recognized Plumber Apprenticeship Program, or possession of a Department of Labor-recognized Plumber journeyperson's card or state license, or eight years of the last 10 years on the active payroll of a State of Michigan licensed plumbing contractor performing tasks pertinent to EMU's needs is necessary.

Ability to perform physically active work of a medium nature, requiring frequent walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling and crouching activity to perform routine work functions; and routine lifting of a minimum of 100 pounds of force to move or transport supplies and equipment is necessary.

Ability to meet Departmental standards of reasonable personal hygiene is necessary.

Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license is necessary.

Special Instructions:

Salary: FM 22 Step 6 = $78,686 annually or $37.83 an hour

If you have a Master's Plumber license through the State of Michigan, your salary will be upgraded to:

Salary: FM 24 Step 6 = $87,298 annually or $41.97 an hour.

Shift: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, M-F or 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Tues - Sat
