Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Summary: 

The Certified Central Sterile Technician is responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembling and sterilizing all reusable supplies for patient care. They are also responsible for the storage of surgical instrumentation/equipment.

Specific Elements and Functions 

1. Identifies opportunities to improve performance within the unit and assists with the application of these opportunities.

2. Demonstrates and applies principles and techniques of decontamination, disinfection and sterilization.

3. Applies principles of infection control and cross-contamination.

4. Responds appropriately in areas of risk, i.e. wears protective equipment, avoids cross contamination, immediately responds to unsatisfactory sterilization results, reprocesses when sterile integrity in doubt.

5. Creates and maintains accurate records regarding inventories, instrument set content, sterilized goods and biological test results.

6. Demonstrates skills to access resource information/personnel for decontamination and sterilization of all hospital or loaner equipment processed through the CSR unit.

7. Maintains all systems in place regarding quality control and accountability for sterilization processes.

8. Demonstrates a working knowledge of all CSR/OR sterilization and disinfection equipment.

9. Demonstrates self-direction above and beyond daily assignments and actively offers assistance to colleagues, both within the main O.R.’s, cardiac O.R.’s and various other surgical services units.

10. Maintains certification for length of employment. Educational opportunities are available through several venues, both in-house and externally.

11. As a professional, understands the concepts of customer service and acts accordingly, with grace under pressure.

12. Realizes that Central Sterile is part of a larger picture. Collaborating with the OR, CSR can enhance patient care through communication to work cohesively, minimize, and eliminate “flashing” of surgical instrumentation.

13. Understands that the CSR position is fluid, with job responsibility changes occurring as needed. Central Sterile is in a unique position to affect for the better or worse, management of the daily OR schedule.

What qualifications you will need:
  • High School Graduate / GED
