Overview
General Dynamics Electric Boat provides an unparalleled learning experience for college students, offering practical exposure in the defense industry alongside expert engineers, shaping the future of submarine innovation.
Engineers at Electric Boat work collaboratively across departments and with our customer to develop innovative solutions for the United States Navys nuclear submarines. As an Intern, you'll be exposed to various engineering activities with the support of our senior staff. This program grants our trainees the opportunity to develop valuable skills and dive into cutting-edge projects such as leading the Columbia Class design and enhancing Virginia Class submarines. Every intern will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge in order to excel in the engineering domain.
This program requires a minimum commitment of 8 weeks during the Summer 2025 Season.
Participation in this program requires medical screening, passing a drug test, and potential DOD Investigation

Naval Architecture and Structural Design and Engineering Summer Internship
Job Description:
The Naval Architecture and Structural Design Directorate is responsible for the engineering and design of the hull and internal/external structures for the VIRGINIA Class submarine, as well as the weights, hydrodynamics and hydrostatics for all classes of submarines.
Working in a design/build team environment, the Naval Architecture and Structural Design engineers take part in concept development, preliminary design, detail design, construction support, overhaul and repair of submarine hull, external and internal structures. With their unique expertise, team members solve complex structural-mechanical problems using state-of-the-art computational simulations, material sciences and structural dynamics. The Naval Architecture Directorate is also responsible for Naval Architecture including weights, hydrodynamics and hydrostatics.
Naval Architecture and Structural Engineering Summer Interns may be responsible for the following tasks:
- Perform calculations supporting submarine structures
- Assist in the design development process through concept development, preliminary design, detail design, construction support, overhaul and repair of submarine structures
- Support development of 3D product models or 2D drawings that disclose the details for fabrication of submarine structures.
- Perform static and dynamic finite element structural analysis to support design of submarine structures and associated components using advanced analytical techniques
- Perform analyses relating to the movement of the submarine through the water and flow over appendages; predict speed and power, hydrodynamic forces on appendages and maneuvering performance
- Predict and manage the hydrostatic balance of submarines through control of the ballast systems
- Analyze stability, submerged equilibrium, surfaced hydrostatics, tank capacity and facility constraints
- Develop barge loading, ballasting and cargo securing plans supporting at-sea transit of submarine modules and components to support construction

Qualifications
To be qualified for this position:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- US citizenship is required.
- Must be able to successfully pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
- Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
- At minimum students must have completed their Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
- Must be available to work 40 hours per week for a minimum eight (8) consecutive weeks between May 2025 to September 2025.
- Selected candidates will be responsible for establishing housing and reliable transportation for the duration of their intern assignment.
