Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Walter Noll Research Fellowship) - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

The Department of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for the Walter Noll Research Fellowship, which is a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship, with the possibility of extension to a third year, beginning September 1, 2025.

Walter Noll was a faculty member in the Department of Mathematical Sciences for several decades and did foundational research in mechanics and thermodynamics. He was also interested in improving the infrastructure of mathematics.

The department has research groups in applied analysis, computational mathematics, combinatorics, discrete and convex geometry, logic, and mathematical finance and stochastic analysis. This fellowship has a teaching requirement of one course per year.

Preference will be given to candidates who have shown outstanding promise and/or excellent accomplishments in research. A Ph.D. in mathematics or closely related disciplines is required.

The candidate should do research in applied analysis, broadly conceived, but it is preferable that the candidate has wide knowledge of many branches of mathematics and is not a narrow specialist. They should also be interested in improving the infrastructure for mathematics in general, in particular the notation and terminology.

Before applying, a candidate should look at Walter Noll?s essay entitled The Conceptual Infrastructure of Mathematics ( https://www.math.cmu.edu/~wn0g/noll/CIM.pdf ) as well as the introduction to his book Finite Dimensional Spaces ( https://www.math.cmu.edu/~wn0g/noll/FDSI.Ch.0..pdf ) and include in their application how their research is compatible with Walter Noll?s view of mathematics. Many other of his works can be found on his website: https://www.math.cmu.edu/~wn0g/noll/

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is committed to increasing the diversity of our community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions. Carnegie Mellon considers applicants for employment without regard to, and does not discriminate on the basis of, gender, race, protected veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and any additional legally protected status.

Applicants should submit all materials electronically through Mathjobs and this Interfolio site. This includes a cover letter, a curriculum vita, list of publications, a teaching statement, a statement about how their work relates to Walter Noll?s view of mathematics, and a statement describing current and planned research activities. At least three letters of reference, one of which addresses teaching, will be solicited through MathJobs.

For full consideration, applications should be submitted by November 15, 2024.

Carnegie Mellon University shall abide by the requirements of 41 CFR §§ 60-1.4(a), 60-300.5(a) and 60-741.5(a). These regulations prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals based on their status as protected veterans or individuals with disabilities, and prohibit discrimination against all individuals based on their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Moreover, these regulations require that covered prime contractors and subcontractors take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment individuals without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, protected veteran status or disability.
