What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the Operator 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

This position will report to the TA-55 Equipment Operations Supervisor and will perform required tasks assigned by the supervisor. The Equipment Operator (EO) 4 or 5 (experience dependent) will be responsible for providing support for the day-to-day operations of ALDWP facilities at TA55.

Operator 4 ($69,500- $110,300)

Fully qualified, experienced operator as defined by the organizations training and qualification program. Operates and monitors critical safety systems according to operating instructions. Responsible for safe execution of technical safety requirement surveillances or surveillances required to meet safety / authorization basis requirements. Performs technical tasks in support of operations, maintenance, science, or engineering activities. Provides direct support in operations, specification, construction, and/or design of facility mechanical, electrical, and/or chemical systems. Checks and inspects operation and maintenance against predetermined standards. Follows process sheets or written / verbal directions. Observes equipment and control panels for operator messages or error indicators. Sets up and runs diagnostic test and reacts appropriately to the messages and reports errors or machine malfunctions as required. May work with and be responsible for multiple systems.

Operator 5 ($83,900 - $136,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level, a fully qualified operator is regarded as a facility expert and may act as lead and review activities of other employees. Is capable of independently conducting research, investigate alternative solutions, and recommend solutions on problems affecting facility equipment maintenance and operations. And fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Extensive experience and understanding of the following aspects of equipment operations:

  • Verbatim procedure compliance

  • Hazard identification and analysis

  • Configuration management

  • Extensive knowledge of typical facility electrical and mechanical systems, sub-systems, and components (heating, ventilation, refrigeration systems, cooling towers, fire suppression/alarm systems, air compressors, pneumatic controls, etc.)
  • Extensive experience troubleshooting and diagnosing service problems and determining procedure to repair.
  • Demonstrated experience reading, understanding and explaining engineering, electrical, and mechanical drawings/specifications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication
Additional Job Requirements for Operator 5:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Expert understanding of and ability to identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration.

Extensive experience with lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

Education/Experience at Operator 4 level: Requires a relevant Associates Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Operator 5 level: Requires an Associate's Degree in a relevant field and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training, and certification, may be expected.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires High School Diploma
Training/Certifications: The EO will be assigned the Equipment Operator qualification, will be assigned as a Glovebox Level 1 operator for PF-4 trolley troubleshooting and will be eligible to participate in additional pay programs when the required criteria are met.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Limiting Conditions of Operation (LCO) as specified in the Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) while performing surveillances or assigned tasks.

  • Understanding of the concepts and principles of Integrated Work Management, Integrated Safety Management (ISM) and Integrated Safeguards and Security Management (ISSM), or equivalent non-DOE programs.

  • Working knowledge with Conduct of Operations as applied to a Nuclear Facility and maintaining a Nuclear Facility

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

  • The TA55 EO position will begin with a 4/10 schedule and may transition to a 24/7/365 coverage position and will therefore require working a shift schedule in the future.

  • The ability to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance with HRP is required.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
