Job Purposes::

Wright State University has an enhanced mission to support the career and professional development needs of all students and alumni. The Assistant Director (Career Consultant) position is in the Division of Enrollment Management will report to the Associate Director. The position will work collaboratively with Deans, academic departments, faculty, and other groups to coordinate and provide essential career readiness services which support the career, academic, personal, and professional preparation needs of students. Focus of the position is on career readiness, professional development, and experiential learning. for the College of Engineering & Computer Science. This position serves as a career advisor for a designated caseload of students. In addition, the Assistant Director will partner with external and campus partners to increase participation in experiential learning opportunities throughout the university.

Required Qualifications::

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Human Services, Psychology, Human Resources, or closely related field and 3 years professional experience in career development, higher education, human resources, or closely related field OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Human Resources, or closely related field and a minimum of 5 years experience in career development, higher education, human resources, or closely related field
  • Knowledge of career and student development theories
  • Knowledge of career assessments
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications::
  • Experience in a technology or engineering discipline
  • Licensed in Ohio as a Professional Counselor or Social Worker
  • Experience in a University Career office working with diverse student populations
  • MBTI and/or Strong Interest Inventory certification
  • Experience utilizing Handshake

Essential Functions and percent of time::

Career Advising for Students & Alumni (Approximately 55%):
  • Provide career coaching/advising on the following topics: career assessments, major and career exploration, job/internship search, graduate school planning, and professional skill development through scheduled and drop-in appointments with individuals and groups (in person and virtually.)
  • Focus will be on early intervention and reach for all students. Career Readiness interventions include resume and cover lettering writing, mock interviews, job search skills, etc.
  • Collaboratively develop coaching strategies in support of Enrollment Management persistence, retention, and outcomes goals.
  • Advise and coach a caseload of students to ensure their persistence at the University using proactive, developmental, and appreciative advising and coaching techniques.
  • Master a firm knowledge of other campus support offices and centers and make appropriate referrals on campus and within the community.



Supporting Campus Activities & Events (Approximately 35%)
  • Work collaboratively with Deans, academic departments, faculty and other groups to coordinate and provide essential services, which support the career and professional preparation needs of students in the College. Serve as Career Development lead to a designated College and meet regularly.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver programming for the essential services of career advising, career-related programming (i.e. workshops, classroom presentations), and graduate schools services.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate career and experiential education events and services that engage students, alumni, and employers including career fairs, internships, career treks, informational interviews, etc.
  • Teach career courses/seminars as needed.
  • Facilitate campus-wide group-format career education sessions. Engage students with career programs, services and resources.
  • Promote department website, database management tools, and social media accounts. Creat social media content.
  • Fulfill campus-level and collaborative unit requests for career programs and career presentations.
  • Gather First Destination Survey data each semester from alumni.


External Relations (Approximately 10%)
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with external partners to identify and recruit potential mentors, job shadow sites, internship partners, and employers.
  • Support data collection for the First Destination Survey
  • Represent the department at recruitment events for incoming undergraduate and graduate students, and provide coaching to prospective students as needed.
