Position Summary:

Serving as a crucial communication link for the entire university, the Delivery Specialist manages both inbound and outbound mail. Responsibilities include retrieving, sorting, and categorizing mail and packages by department, delivering them to the correct recipients, and forwarding misdirected mail.

The ideal candidate possesses excellent time management and organizational skills, is proactive, and is service-oriented.

Workplace Requirements

  • This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at the Police Annex Building, Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.
  • Ability to lift boxes up to 40 lb.
  • Ability to travers campus in various weather conditions.

Hiring Range: $15.75 - $16.50 per hour

Minimum Requirements:
  • Valid Texas Driver's License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past three years.

  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring accurate sorting and delivery of mail and packages.
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of handling and transporting heavy packages and being on your feet for extended periods.
  • Customer Service: Providing friendly and helpful service to customers, addressing their questions and concerns.
  • Communication: Clear and effective communication with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to handle unexpected issues, such as misdirected mail or delivery challenges, swiftly and effectively.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Familiarity with tracking systems and ability to log deliveries and process mail using software.
  • Reliability: Dependability in adhering to schedules and fulfilling responsibilities consistently.
  • Proactive Attitude: Taking initiative to improve processes and provide the best possible service.

Essential Functions:
  • Sorting and Processing Mail: Sorting incoming and outgoing mail and packages by department or recipient, ensuring accurate and efficient handling.
  • Delivering Mail and Packages: Transporting and delivering mail and packages to the correct departments or recipients within a specified area or campus.
  • Logging Deliveries: Recording the details of deliveries and pickups, maintaining accurate logs for tracking and accountability purposes with the use of handheld device and computer.
  • Customer Assistance: Assisting customers with mail services, helping them track and locate packages
  • Forwarding Misdirected Mail: Identifying and redirecting mail and packages that have been sent to the wrong department or recipient.
  • Operating Delivery Vehicles: Safely operating delivery vehicles, if required, to transport mail and packages.
  • Maintaining Equipment: Keeping delivery equipment, such as carts and vehicles, in good working condition.
  • Ensuring Security: Safeguarding mail and packages to prevent loss, theft, or damage.
  • Adhering to Policies and Procedures: Following university policies and procedures related to mail handling, delivery, and customer service.
