Scheduled Hours 37.5 Position Summary Reporting to the Associate Dean for Finance & Administration, the Director of Research Administration manages the Schools research portfolio and provides administrative and compliance oversight to funded research at the Arts & Sciences. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Finance & Administration and the Vice Dean for Research, the Director will support the Arts & Sciences goal to enhance the schools research portfolio and develop a Global research portfolio. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Manage and direct the day-to-day organization and functioning of the Arts & Sciences Grants Administration Network (GAIN) including the coordination and compliance of reports and office activities. Full authority and responsibility to direct and supervise staff. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and processes designed to improve planning, decision-making, and office effectiveness in support of pre- and post-award grant activity. Supervise research projects budget development and reporting to project staff. In partnership with the Director of Budgeting and Accounting, facilitate effective award management through monitoring of award spending, the timeliness of reports and adherence to agency guidelines. Oversee large-scale grant transfers, inter-departmental proposal submissions, and other collaborative research activities. Identify key funding opportunities and disseminate them to targeted groups on a regular basis. Develop a strategic compliance plan for research administration and compliance. Coordinate, monitor, analyze and enforce regulatory compliance requirements that relate to externally funded research and training at the Arts & Sciences. Develop and maintain relationships with staff of primary funding constituencies around regulatory compliance issues and our externally funded research activity. Assure that required grant and contract reports related to compliance, subcontracting, terminations, and closeouts are submitted in accordance with sponsor guidelines. Provide direction to anticipate and guide the short-range and long-range planning process and provide administrative and compliance oversight for Arts & Sciences sponsored research activity. Oversee and provide guidance, communications, and training for staff, faculty, and administrators related to effective pre- and post-award grant support and compliance requirements for research. In conjunction with the AD/F&A and the Director of Budgeting and Accounting, contribute to the schools budgeting process in regard to research funding for the school. Research, analysis and preparation of reports to determine future strategic direction, accountability, and effectiveness. Assess risk and strategic impact of proposed sponsored projects activity. Advocate for the School in budget negotiations with funding agencies. Develop innovative approaches for the management of our research portfolio. Develop and implement internal policies, procedures, and processes to increase efficiencies, planning and decision-making in the management of our global portfolio. Oversee the maintenance, and streamlining of systems and procedures used to track research efforts and compliance requirements. Establish key metrics for assessing effectiveness of identified processes and systems. Design and review data-driven reports and dashboard systems for use by the Dean, Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, and Vice Dean of Research and Entrepreneurship in assessing the Schools effectiveness in meeting its overall research objectives. Oversee and provide guidance, communications, and training for staff, faculty and administrators related to compliance requirements and research administration in general. Provide consultation to Research Office staff, faculty, staff and students related to research compliance. Anticipate training related to Arts & Sciences researchers emerging grant administration and compliance needs and identify opportunities to meet those needs. Interface with Washington University offices regarding research grant administration and compliance. Represent the Office of Research externally to sponsors and peers on research compliance inquiries and issues. Perform other duties as assigned. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
