Small Animal Floater for Emergency & Critical Care and Small Animal Patient Care Services Technician

Job Summary

Provide nursing care to emergency room, intensive care unit patients or small animal patient care general and intermediate care wards using established protocols set up by small animal emergency and critical care faculty. Work independently under these guidelines in a teaching environment including providing quasi-instruction to veterinary students. Facility maintenance for the unit and temporary support to other VMTH departments at times may be required.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

  • Must obtain a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of date of hire
  • Experience independently providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
  • Experience working in a small animal clinic as a veterinary technician or as a veterinary assistant.
  • Experience giving medications.
  • Experience using patient monitoring equipment.
  • Experience drawing blood samples.
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of students, staff, clinicians and clients and recognize and manage difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Experience in the placement of a multi-lumen catheters in either a peripheral or central vein and utilize proper technique(s) to secure and maintain the catheter.
  • Experience training and directing.

Department Overview

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

    Work Environment
    • Fulfill a required six week, full-time training period. Substitute or fill in coverage (to include holidays, weekdays, weeknights and weekends). Work a minimum of 20 hours per week and may be scheduled up to 40 hours per week depending on the needs of the service. Participate in On-call shifts. May use a respirator during decontamination cleanings. Subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. May wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers. Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients. May work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
