RETIREMENT CLAIMS EXAMINER (TEMP) - Military Veterans

Job Summary:

Performs duties relating to the administration of the retirement plan for Navy Exchange associates and U.S. Coast Guard activities including determining estimated actual retirement benefits and death benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review research and assemble information from multiple sources Navy Exchange Coast Guard Non-Appropriated and Appropriated Funds Activities to determine the appropriate benefit that is payable at retirement.
  • Ensure corrections to employment retirement and payroll records to include records maintained by various NAFs and APF activities.
  • Calculates estimated and actual retirement income benefits based on various retirement options leave without pay workers compensation and disability pension contributions payments.
  • Calculates Survivor Benefits for widow widower based on death benefits formula for active service associates and adjusts surviving spouse benefit to age 60 plus applicable COLA s.
  • Calculates Survivor Benefit for Death after retirement plus applicable colas.
  • Calculate excludable amount for retiree s contributions interest amounts and retro annuity payment.
  • Establish and initiate retirement payment accounts in retirement vendor system.
  • Input all retire personal data tax deductions and survivor annuity information.
  • Update income tax information address and bank account changes into retirement vendor system as applicable.
  • Enter start and stop dates upload cash out and reversals of overpayments documents into retirement vendor system when applicable.
  • Complete income and portability verifications for retiree s from the appropriate NAF or Agency.
  • Provide 401K and pension verification letters for active and retired associates.
  • Update HRIS 401K contribution field iaw updates received from 401K vendor data feed regarding participate contribution.
  • Makes other updates as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains statistical worksheets records files logs on retirement deaths estimates Option B s and death benefits.
  • Prepares statistical listing for file maintenance necessary to incorporate all changes affecting participation in the plan.
  • Perform actuarial review of retirement claims for Willis Towers Watson Data Services.
  • Supports projects as needed resulting from system updates and implementations.
  • Maintains liaison with field activities and provides advice and guidance on proper completion of forms.
  • Provides explanations of benefits determinations and advises on status of claims to field activities active associates survivors and retirees.
  • Carries out policy of courtesy and service.
  • Exercises tact good manners and courtesy when working with fellow associates and customers.
  • Tactfully responds to inquiries and provides assistance in a prompt and friendly manner.
  • Actively seeks to become knowledgeable concerning store policies and services offered to carry out the requirements of this position.
  • Works under the general supervision of a designated supervisor who is available to provide advice and assistance with unusually difficult problems.
  • Assignments are performed independently and incumbent is required to be knowledgeable of the various employee benefit plans.
  • Work is reviewed for accuracy technical adequacy conformance and timeliness.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


Requirements

GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three years of experience in administrative or other responsible work that enabled the applicant to gain general knowledge of retirement and benefit claims.

OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE

One year of academic study above the high school level may be substituted for nine months of experience up to a maximum of a four-year bachelor s degree for three years of general experience.

AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

Six months of experience in the application and adjudication of retirement and benefits claims and the various laws regulations and provisions of an organization s retirement plan or other related retirement benefits claims experience of a non-clerical nature.

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) is the headquarters for the worldwide NEXCOM Enterprise and is one of 11 commands under the Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

NEXCOM oversees six primary business programs:

  • Navy Exchange (NEX) Retail Stores and Services

  • Navy Clothing Textile and Research Facility (NCTRF)
  • Ships Stores Program
  • Telecommunications Program Office (TPO)

With the exception of the Ships Store Program, the NEXCOM Enterprise conducts its operations as a federal non-appropriated funded instrumentality. As such, the command is self-supporting with 70 percent of its profits given to Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs and the remaining 30 percent reinvested in NEX buildings and equipment.

NEXCOM is a military organization and is subject to congressional legislation as well as oversight from the Department of the Navy. NEXCOM’s parent command is the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

The NEXCOM Enterprise boasts over 14,000 civilian associates in a wide variety of jobs worldwide, over 40 percent of whom are military affiliated as either family members or veterans. The bulk of NEXCOM’s workforce is comprised of government non-appropriated civilians, many of whom are also military affiliated as either family members or veterans.
