Job Overview
This is an onsite/hybrid position, located at Komatsu’s newly built headquarters in Milwaukee, WI.
The Automation Center of Excellence is responsible for researching and developing new advanced autonomous and situational awareness technologies for Komatsu’s mining equipment (mining shovels, loaders, drills, hauling trucks, etc.) The Senior Principal Engineer-Automation Innovation is responsible for new product design in the field of machine autonomy. Automation Innovation includes research, development, integration, programming and testing applied to large-scale mining equipment.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Leads automation innovation projects, acting as a technical resource for other team members. Mentors, develops and coaches other Automation Engineers.
- Researches new/alternative machine automation tools and systems applicable to mining equipment and validates their potential viability.
- Leads New Product Design initiatives in the field of machine autonomy, including technical specification, hardware selection, integration, programming, testing and associated documentation of systems designed to enhance the autonomous functionality of large-scale mining equipment.
- Turns functional concepts into technical designs with a strong focus on end-user experiences.
- Understands the product design lifecycle, software development and maintenance, and the critical characteristics of reliable and user-friendly product design.
- Collaborates with different business units and other internal departments.
- Shares knowledge and conveys resource capabilities and needs to upper management.
- Works with a high level of individual autonomy and freedom to pursue creative design ideas.
- Drives continuous improvement programs in support of reliable safe products and services as well as supporting lean Engineering and operational Excellence initiatives.
- Travels up to 10% when necessary.
Qualifications/Requirements
- 10+ years of robotics, sensors, programming, machine autonomy, and/or controls experience required.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Robotics or Mechatronics Engineering preferred).
- Masters’ degree preferred.
- Excellent communication skill (verbal, written and presentation).
- Creative, high energy, self-motivated and self-starter.

- Experience with control architecture design utilizing programming languages (LabVIEW, Python, C++, MATLAB and Simulink)
- Experience with Computer Vision (OpenCV, CUDA, PCL)
- Knowledge of RTI DDS Communication platform (ROS2)
- Experience in Operating Systems (Linux, Windows Embedded)
- Experience in System integration involving controls programming
- Experience integrating advanced sensors such as RADAR, 3D LiDAR, etc.
- Installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and supporting technologies or machines experience
- Knowledge and/or experience with kinematics
- Engineering documentation experience
- Experience in various industrial communication protocols (RS232/422/485, TCP/IP, CANOpen, J1939, ProfiBus/ProfiNet, EtherCAT, etc.)
- UI/UX development experience

The Komatsu North America Mining Distribution and Service group is a critical part of our Komatsu global organization. We, sell, install, service, provide parts and rebuild equipment, as well as provide digital solutions for our customers.
