SALARY RANGE: The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $92,185.60- $115,232

This position of Senior Engineer is for the UI DER Engineering & Execution team in CT. The successful candidate will be responsible for safe and reliable distributed energy resource (DER) interconnections in Connecticut (UI).

The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve moderate to complex problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Able to work mostly independently with guidance on only the more complex tasks. Participates and represents UI on industry associations as needed. Follow updates in research and development in the power industry, specifically in the area of distributed energy resources, through training and industry associations.

Applies and interprets company, local, state, and national codes and standards and ensures Compliance with regulatory requirements. Conducts feasibility studies, completes estimates and develops engineering criteria.

MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Scope of work - range of responsibilities):


  • Perform detailed, moderate to complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services.

  • Solves moderate to complex DER interconnection problems. Utilizes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. (e.g. Customer generators, photovoltaic systems, fuel cells, batteries).

  • Approve, maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams). Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of moderate to complex level of difficulty using depth & breadth of expertise in own discipline.

  • Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements. Participate in Industry associations as needed.

  • Lead teams, mentor & review engineering work of others. Anticipate & make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs. Explain difficult concepts & influences others. May be required to make presentations to regulatory/public entities.

  • Lead project teams to complete assigned tasks. Assist in guiding and mentoring engineers in design and engineering development. Manage and provides direction for resources outside of the department/company.

  • Lead others to specify & design systems to resolve complex problems in non-std. situations & develop creative solutions. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & UI polices/procedures.

  • Possess an in-depth knowledge and interpret processes and standards related to DERs. Recommend solutions and best practices where appropriate. Represent Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Engineering on projects, task forces and studies.

  • Develop business cases & manage projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable UI guidelines. Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program.

  • Assist with forecasting, planning, scheduling, monitoring, controlling budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders. Assist in the management of resource allocation including developing forecasts and plans to ensure adequate resources are available.

  • Maintain knowledge of leading-edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations. Able to explain difficult concepts and influence others to change. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities. Able to lead a Team or mentor others.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience Required :


  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Engineering, preferably within the power utility sector.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET (or equivalent) accredited college/university.

  • Advanced knowledge of distributed energy resources.

  • Knowledge of national and international standards, regulations, and compliance requirements associated with distributed energy resources.

  • Experience with single-line diagrams and site plan layout drawings.


Education & Experience Preferred :


  • Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain certification.

  • Experience with three-line diagrams and control schematics.

  • Experience with circuit modelling software applications such as CYMDIST.

  • Knowledge of IEEE 1547 standards.

  • Knowledge of FERC/NERC/NPCC/ISO-NE and state regulations.

  • Experience with customer-funded projects.

  • Specialized advanced training is also preferred (e.g. PTI, WPI , ECNE PUI, or a graduate level engineering degree).
