About the Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics provides comprehensive family-centered health care to all children, multi-level professional education to students, physicians, and allied health care workers in all aspects of pediatrics, and a voice of advocacy for children of the state of Illinois. We are also actively engaged in the community to improve the health status of children through preventative and educational efforts, and to lead with basic and clinical research into childhood diseases to move the field of pediatrics forward. Our diverse medical teams bring the world's latest advancements to patient care, research, and teaching.

About the Section of Genetics

The section of Pediatric Genetics provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and clinical evaluation services and treatment for children and adults who have birth defects and genetic disorders. Services also include genetic counseling; carrier testing; and prenatal diagnosis for prospective parents. We have an on-site comprehensive diagnostic biochemical and molecular genetics laboratory to provide fast, reliable diagnosis and treatment. We have an active newborn screen follow up program for inborn errors of metabolism funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). We also provide genetics education for pediatric house staff, medical students, and genetic counseling students.

Job Summary:
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a board-certified Metabolic Geneticist with expertise in biochemical genetics. Faculty rank and tenure will be commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Diagnosis and Genetic Counseling: Identifying and diagnosing inherited metabolic disorders through genetic testing and clinical evaluation. Providing genetic counseling to patients and families regarding the nature of the disorder, inheritance patterns, and implications for future pregnancies.

Medical Management: Developing and implementing treatment plans for patients with metabolic disorders. This may include dietary modifications, medication management, enzyme replacement therapy, or other specialized treatments.

Research and Clinical Trials: Conducting or participating in research studies and clinical trials aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of metabolic disorders. This could involve basic science research, translational research, or clinical research.

Patient Care and Follow-up: Monitoring patients with metabolic disorders over time to assess their progress, manage any complications, and adjust treatment plans as needed. Providing ongoing support and guidance to patients and their families.

Collaboration: Working closely with other healthcare professionals, such as genetic counselors, pediatricians, internists, dietitians, and specialized nurses, to coordinate comprehensive care for patients with metabolic disorders.

Education: Educating medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals about metabolic disorders, their diagnosis, management, and the latest advancements in the field.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO from accredited medical school or foreign equivalent medical degree.
  • Unrestricted Illinois license to practice medicine or Illinois license eligible.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Pediatrics required.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Medical Genetics required.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Biochemical Genetics or Clinical Biochemical Genetics preferred.
