ECR Ion Source Specialist - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( LBNL ) Nuclear Science Division ( NSD ) has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will work on R&D for detector instrumentation as a vital member of a team consisting of physicists, engineers, post-doctoral scholars, and students. You will provide technical support to the RNC program with an initial focus on the detector development for the future Electron-Ion Collider. You will work with your supervisor to design, implement and deploy electronics and data acquisition systems based on Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for these detectors.



What You Will Do:

  • Manage the operation of the injector ion sources at the 88-Inch Cyclotron accelerator.
  • Take operational responsibility for the ECR ion sources.
  • Provide analytical, operational, and experimental support from an on-call basis to facility users and cyclotronstaff.
  • Apply engineering/scientific standards and practices in the safe operation of the ECR ion sources, and the support systems used for diagnostics, beam control and beam instrumentation.
  • Develop the tuning skills to produce high-charge-state ion beams from the ECR ion sources.
  • Perform maintenance work and implement repairs or upgrades.
  • Maintain software and control systems associated with the injector ion sources.
  • Maintain effective documentation of machine performance and malfunctions.
  • Diagnose, analyze, and mitigate failure conditions. Direct and coordinate technical personnel during repairs and upgrades.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, nuclear engineering or related field or equivalent in years of work experience.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment; plan, coordinate and complete projects.
  • Sufficient mechanical and electrical skills to perform maintenance work and implement repairs or upgrades.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the engineering staff, scientific staff and outside users to ensure optimal experimental results; effective oral and written communication skills and computer skills.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical/scientific knowledge of ion sources and ion beam optics and transport.
  • Experience with scientific instruments and computer control interfaces such as LabVIEW, PLCs and interlock systems.
  • Experience with high vacuum equipment, cryo-pumps, and cryogenic systems.


Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $82,728-$103,440 which fits within the full salary range of $82,728-$139,644 for the N50.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
