What You Will Do
Actinide Material Processing and Power (AMPP) Division leads and executes various key missions to support our nation's security and space endeavors as we produce the next generation of nuclear engineers and scientists. AMPP proudly supports Pu-238 science and manufacturing for NASA exploration programs, various Defense Programs, the Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System (ARIES) for nuclear non-proliferation, the Material Recovery & Recycle (MR&R) to enable the future of plutonium missions, and Americium production to support well logging for the United States.

This position reports directly to the AMPP Division Leader and is responsible for the Power Supply Assembly and Product Characterization (AMPP-6) group. The group consists of 3 different teams. The Harvesting team recovers fuel, specifically Pu238 oxide, from containers and provides the fuel to the AMPP-5 group for Aqueous processing. AMPP-5 produces heat source units which are assembled into power supplies by the AMPP-6 Power Supply Assembly Team. As part of the quality verification of these modules, units are selected and given to the Metallography team to disassemble for thorough analytical testing.

As the AMPP-6 Group Leader, the selected candidate will manage and provide leadership over approximately 55 people consisting of technicians, scientists, engineers, floor supervisors and first line managers. The GL will represent the organization on technical, operational and administrative issues to both internal and external customers. The position responsibilities will include defining business unit capabilities and requirements that translate into work scope, cost, and scheduling. The selected applicant will provide technical leadership and management of AMPP-6 tactical and strategic operations in support of meeting ALDWP objectives.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in executing programmatic work in compliance with nuclear facility requirements and the authorization basis specified under 10 CFR 830 Nuclear Safety Management and 10 CFR 835 Occupational Radiation Protection.
  • Experience executing work in compliance with DOE O 474.2 Nuclear Material and Accountability.
  • Extensive working knowledge of the technical and operational discipline of Conduct of Operations DOE O 422.1.
  • Record of technical leadership and management of a production organization including experience in technical decision making, planning, and goal setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in staffing, performance and salary management, conflict resolution, and managing performance.
  • Record of effective personnel motivation and development including mentoring, team building, and employee development.
  • Demonstrated record of promoting teamwork, consensus building, mentoring, and motivating peers and subordinates and working across division lines with other organizations.
  • In-depth knowledge of work package development and execution, identification of resource requirements and development of resource loaded schedules and financial stewardship.
  • Record of effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications.
  • In-depth knowledge of and proven ability in implementing, enforcing, and providing guidance for Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, and 4 years nuclear experience. Education or experience that is job related may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may fulfill 3 of the 4 years of nuclear experience on a one-for-one time basis.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field from and accredited institution and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Security: Active DOE Q-Clearance and HRP certification
  • Experience with high quality, moderate/low-rate production in a management role.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: materials characterization techniques, mechanical/thermal testing, furnaces, cutting operations and/or nuclear material management.
  • Familiarity with and LANL implementation of quality programs such as NAP 401.1A Weapons Quality Policy and Department of Energy (DOE) O 414.1D, Quality Assurance.
  • Experience with nuclear high hazard facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution.
  • Experience in project and program management, including planning, organizing, and resource management.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in aneligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligibleposition as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
