About the Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Senior/Principal Manufacturing Engineer to work with and support a key assurance role within the Ministry of Defence's Nuclear Submarine Build Programme.

This role supports the Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) team, which provides independent nuclear safety and technical advice to the MoD. Specifically, this role will be providing independent third-party witnessing, surveillance and inspection for the manufacture and testing of the Naval Reactor Plants (NRP), which is a key part of delivering the UK's future submarine fleet, including the Continuous At Sea Deterrent.

The ideal candidate would have detailed understanding and experience of manufacturing, testing techniques and design/quality standards for high reliability pressure equipment or structural components. A working knowledge of the design and operation of the Naval Reactor Plant (NRP) or equivalent is desirable, alongside effective communication skills to work with the INA team, MoD Customer and enterprise partners. Training and support can be provided to supplement candidates where further development in specific areas may be necessary.

The focus of this role would predominantly consist of working on the equipment suppliers site in Derby to monitor and witness the manufacturing work being undertaken and utilise existing experience and knowledge to provide an independent and balanced view on how it is being carried out. This will involve occasional travel to the INA office in Birchwood, MoD HQ offices in Bristol and supplier sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting on-site Independent Witnessing of NRP manufacturing processes, methods and testing.
  • Provision of impartial, balanced and proportionate advice to the MoD in support of the manufacture of future NRPs.
  • Representing INA at meetings with MoD and their contractors.
  • Preparation of reports to articulate and brief findings.
  • Conducting work according to the best applicable safety, technical and regulatory standards, consistent with relevant good practice and quality assurance.
  • Complying with information security requirements.

  • Degree or equivalent professional training in science or engineering.
  • Chartership, or working towards, within an engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Detailed knowledge within the manufacture of pressure retaining systems or equivalent structural components through relevant qualifications or demonstrable experience.
  • Effective communication skills to be able to work directly with the customer and their contractors.
  • Knowledge or experience of nuclear engineering is desirable.
