at Cummins Inc
DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented Thermal & Fluid Systems Simulation Engineer candidate to join our team specializing in Thermal and Fluid Systems Engineering for our Corporate Business at one of our Cummins Inc. locations, or if applicable, your remote home office, within the United States.
In this early career role as a Thermal & Fluid Systems Simulation Engineer, you will develop models of the engine system and components. You will utilize those models to drive decisions on engine hardware definition, controls validation, and product robustness and balance engine performance (power, transient performance, etc.), system cost, global emissions requirements, and operating costs (fuel consumption, etc.).
As a Thermal & Fluid Systems Simulation Engineer you will:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams who are responsible for developing the final product, including test, design, and analysis.
- Be exposed to multiple phases of the development cycle such as exploratory work or engine development close to production launch.
- Utilize engine models to size and optimize engine components, including turbochargers, valve train, power cylinder, intake and exhaust manifold, intake, and exhaust throttles etc., to meet engine performance requirements.
- Collaborate with testing and validation engineers to develop validation test plans for engine systems and subsystems to meet performance requirements.
- Work closely with controls engineers to assist the development of accurate control strategies for aftertreatment thermal management and powertrain.
- Leverage tools for data analysis and enhancing modelling capabilities.
- Analyze engine performance and derive key conclusions from simulation results.
- Present modelling results explaining the assumptions, boundary conditions, parameters, and conclusions related to the model.
- Support the delivery of training on a simulation tool or process.
- Perform optimization to quantify the effect of design levers on engine performance.
- Apply the principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
- Apply the principles of thermodynamics and energy conversion.
You will make an impact by:
- Developing and validating physics-based models of the engine systems
- Contributing to the development of the engine system architecture for different applications, from concept stage to optimal design
- Assisting Hardware/Software/Model in the Loop teams on integrating the predictive engine plant models into closed-loop, system-level models for Engine Control Unit (ECU) controls development and validation
- Implementing modeling best practices to accelerate model development process and improve the quality and fidelity of engine models.
- Working efficiently within a multidisciplinary and fast-paced environment
- Troubleshooting a modeling problem and documenting the troubleshooting process
Using tools related to thermal and fluid sciences such as:
- GT-Suite (engine cycle simulation)
- MATLAB/Simulink
- modeFRONTIER (system optimization & automation)
- AVL-Concerto (data processing)
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need:
- A College, University or equivalent Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field
- A postgraduate (Master’s or PhD) degree may be required for select Thermal & Fluid Systems Simulation Engineer roles.
- Good communication skills along with strengths in logic, planning and decision making.
- Good analytical, experimental and project management skills
- Experience using Microsoft Office tools or equivalents, especially Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
