Laboratory Support Services Manager (LAB RSCH SUPV 1) Job Summary Under faculty direction, supervise, coordinate, manage and execute Laboratory Support Services, responsible for the reception of samples/clients for the Central Laboratory including submissions from the Branch Laboratories; perform receiving/processing/routing of clinical specimens, provides telephone/results reporting coverage in the Receiving Section, assists in animal care, handling and facility maintenance, and provides backup support to the Glass Washing/Media Preparation/ Shipping areas. Initial placement will be between $67,700/yr. - $86,000/yr. commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience. Apply By Date October 7, 2024 at 11:59pm Qualifications Minimum Qualifications For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position. Experience with sample and data management skills, including: skills to perform cataloging and filing of information (software and hard copy); skills to follow protocols regarding sample storage; skills to learn computer programs designed for sample tracking, worksheet production, and workload reporting; and computer skills to quickly/accurately perform data entry into computer. Working knowledge of diagnostic procedures and tests used in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, including knowledge of biological and environmental samples for a variety of microbiologic, immunologic, biotechnology, histologic and clinical chemistry tests and adverse sample conditions that may affect testing. Knowledge of animal diseases, sample selection and types of testing performed in bacteriology, immunology, virology, toxicology, biotechnology, clinical pathology related to animal diseases, including ability to recognize names of diseases and conditions from submittals where the sample may be a biohazard to laboratory personnel or may be a state or federal reportable disease. Be able to effectively communicate with veterinary practitioners, owners, state and federal veterinarians/officials utilizing abroad working knowledge of veterinary medicine, food animal husbandry and the skills to provide test results from information in the computerized CAHFS Laboratory Information System. May include providing definition of test terminology, diseases. Knowledge of regulations for intra and interstate transport/shipping of biohazardous materials to and from clinics and other laboratories with demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide variety of individuals, to include co-workers, clients of the CAHFS, individuals from other University units, outside/government agencies. Skill to handle potentially infectious material, with knowledge of sterile techniques and skills to learn to effectively operate/utilize a microscope, laminar flow hood, centrifuges, analytical balances, volumetric glassware, pH meters, dishwashers and autoclaves. Skills, knowledge and ability to handle live and dead animals (cattle, pigs, horses, poultry, zoo animals, etc.), as well as blood and tissues. Preferred Qualifications Possess comprehensive knowledge of veterinary diagnostic testing performed within the University of California (Genetics, Clinical Endocrinology, Clinical Chemistry and Hematology, Core Facility) and of resources available to clients for testing nationwide. Familiarity with University of California purchasing policies, procedures, and forms. Key Responsibilities 30% - ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL SUPERVISION 25% - SAMPLE PROCESSING 25% - TELEPHONE COVERAGE AND RESULTS REPORTING 5% - SHIPPING BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES 5% - LABORATORY SUPPORT/BACKUP IN MEDIA PREPARATION 5% - ANIMAL CARE/HANDLING/MAINTENANCE OF ANIMAL HOLDING FACILITY 5% - OTHER DUTIES Department Overview CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies, and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential. Upon completion of a background check and appropriate training, must participate in the select agent program. Ability to complete Select Agent background clearance procedures. Due to the nature of the essential responsibilities, this position is not eligible for remote work. Valid CA Driver License. Due to the potential work with poultry diseases, ownership and handling of birds outside of work place are not allowed. Due to the potential work with poultry diseases, electronic devices, such as cell phone, iPod, etc., usage will be restricted inside the lab. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period). Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines. Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.
