Title: Health Care Professional 5 â" Social Work
Supervisor: Program Director of Counseling
Appt: temp/casual 15-20 hrs per week
Budgeted pay: $32.23/hr

Overview:
This position is located in the department of UMD/Health Services, a part of Student Life. The employee
provides counseling (assessment/diagnosis, treatment) to UMD students; maintains appropriate charting
and paperwork; provides crisis response intervention (both to individual students and campus-wide
crises); implements therapy or education groups; and provides consultation to students, staff, faculty and
administration.

Job Description:
40% Individual, group and relationship counseling and psychotherapy:

  • Intake/Assessment/diagnostic interviews to collect data pertaining to presenting problem, general health, psychological functioning, psychosocial history, academic functioning.
  • Treatment of identified issue; determines appropriate short-term therapeutic work for students with various psychological concerns. Maintain awareness of developmental and psychological issues for a college population.
  • Referral to other providers, as needed: requires knowledge of services on campus pertaining to student; requires knowledge of other local resources (i.e. other mental health providers, treatment programs, medical facilities, social services, advocacy services, etc.)
  • Implementation and maintenance of psychotherapy groups: requires expert skills relating to group process; expert knowledge of developmental psychology; communication and confrontation skills; teaching and skill-building techniques.
  • Completion of paperwork (intake summaries, progress notes, termination systems.
  • Collaboration with other service providers (advisors, student affairs, medical, psychiatric, disability and career services, etc) to coordinate care.

35% Crisis response intervention daily and as needed, including individuals, groups and campus-wide interventions:
  • Response/Assessment of individuals in crisis: requires expert knowledge of risk factors, potential for harm, availability of crisis response alternatives (i.e. housing, police, and hospitalization); requires expert communication skills to diffuse situation; requires expert ability to implement crisis plan.

5% Plan and implement presentations and outreach on campus:
  • Planning and implementation of special topic groups and classroom presentations: requires general knowledge regarding a variety of mental health and developmental issues; organization and teaching skills; requires public speaking skills.

5% Provide leadership / consultation to medical staff, faculty, administration, parents, and students:
  • Education / consultation skills: requires effective communication skills; community-organizing skills; maintenance of on-going relationships with staff in collegiate units and ASSL at UMD, medical staff at UMD Health Services, and local community mental health providers.
  • Serve on appropriate committees, task forces, etc.; requires the maintenance of a visible presence on campus, effective communication skills; effective community-organizing skills.
  • Requires knowledge of broad array of mental health and developmental issues; effective communication skills.

5% UMD Health Services participation:
  • Abide by the Health Services Expectations for Professional Behavior.
  • Attendance at all required meetings: requires listening skills, maintenance of issues affecting student medical, counseling and education; requires problem-solving skills; requires effective communication, negotiation skills.
  • Special projects as assigned


Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree plus at least 6 years of experience, or an advance degree plus at least 4 years of experience, or a terminal degree plus at least one year of experience.
  • Applicants must be licensed in the state of Minnesota.
