The Information Sciences and Modeling Group (A-1) develops information systems and models to understand complicated threat scenarios, like weapons of mass destruction, hurricanes, and infectious disease outbreaks. The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world.
We are seeking a post-baccalaureate student with a degree in a STEM field to join our Data Analytics team. The Data Analytics Team performs basic and applied research focused on infectious disease modeling and forecasting, political instability modeling and forecasting, predictive analytics for national security applications, and large-scale data analytics. Our expertise covers statistics, machine learning, dynamical systems, graph theory, agent-based simulations, and data analytics. We ensure the scientific and technological validity of our approaches by working closely with physicists, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, economists, remote sensing scientists, political scientists, and public health officials through interdisciplinary collaborations. The student will partner with an experienced mentor who will provide guidance and feedback and work closely with a team of scientists in supporting various projects throughout the course of the year-around internship.

Minimum Job Requirements:
- Educational background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related field.
- Communication: Good oral and written communication skills.
- Programming Experience: Working knowledge of Python.
- Continuous Learning: Demonstrated ability to continually learn new things, as well as being open to working on a variety of topics.
- Environment: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Must have been awarded a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, data science or related field within the past three years but not yet accepted and enrolled in a graduate program. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent, on the last bachelor's degree earned.

- Experience with large-scale data processing
- Experience with machine learning
- Familiarity with high-performance computing and parallel computation
- Familiarity with agent-based modeling
- Familiarity analyzing and/or interpreting disease-related data

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
