Associate University Attorney | East Carolina University - Military Veterans

Job Duties: Under the leadership of the Chancellor, ECU seeks to increase its research productivity and expand its licensing and economic development activities. The Associate University attorney will coordinate with other counsel in the Office of University Counsel and provide comprehensive legal support, advice and counsel on clinical trial and academic research issues (including industry, federal, and unfunded investigator-initiated projects), economic engagement and development, procurement, construction, compliance, privacy, contracts, athletics, litigation, and finance. The position will provide professional legal advice and counsel primarily in connection with the activities of research and economic development , including, but not limited to: 1. the review and negotiation of research agreements and IP licensing agreements; 2. preparing and conducting in-service training for Sponsored Programs Officers and creating templates for their use in reviewing and approving contracts; 3. advising on conflicts of interest, export controls, research integrity and misconduct proceedings, research security, international trade compliance (such as sanctions, export controls, restricted parties screening, custom duties, partner government agencies), human subjects, animal research, grants and contracts, technology transfer, emerging data privacy issues, and ECU and UNC research policies; 4. advising on patent, copyright and trademark law and coordinating with external IP counsel; 5. advising the administration and staff with regard to ECU Centers and Institutes and non-profit entities; 6. serve as an essential member of the OUC's Contract Practice Group and provide and/or coordinate legal advice for contract matters; and 7. other matters as assigned by the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs. In the performance of duties, this position will: 1. Provide expert, comprehensive legal advice directly to administrators and, as needed, other units within the University without the need for close supervision. 2. Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions and prepare legal documents including, but not limited to, drafting complex and innovative contracts in the research and health care setting. 3. Utilize strong contracting skills including negotiating, drafting, and interpreting multifaceted agreements, as well as effectively communicating the complex legal issues/risks to administrators. 4. Appropriately manage various stakeholder interests and establish cooperative working relationships with the University's varied internal and external constituencies contacted in the course of performing assigned duties. 5. Meet deadlines, manage and revise priorities consistent with the highest needs of the institution, and proactively follow-through to ensure completion of projects in a timely manner without close supervision. 6. Utilize excellent and effective communication skills (oral and written) and practices, as well as sound judgment as to method of communication. 7. Utilize excellent analytical skills, including the ability to identify and resolve legal issues. 8. Represent the University professionally and tactfully. 9. Work collaboratively in a small legal office, including collaborative skills and leadership style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, and flexibility. 10. Maintain confidentiality 11. Effectively use technology and computer applications for communications. Salary and title are commensurate with experience. May fill as Associate University Attorney or Assistant University Attorney (classification and working title) based on qualifications and experience of selected candidate. Minimum Education/Experience: Associate University Attorney must have J.D. from an ABA -accredited law school; and either a current member in good standing of the North Carolina Bar or eligible for admission to the North Carolina Bar within one (1) year of hiring and a minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience. May fill as Assistant University Attorney (classification and working title) based on qualifications and experience of selected candidate. Assistant University Attorney must have a J.D. from and ABA -Accredited law school; either a current member in good standing of the North Carolina Bar or eligible for admission to the North Carolina Bar within one (1) year of hiring; and a minimum of one (1) year of legal practice experience. The Office of University Counsel provides comprehensive legal advice and counsel regarding legal matters to the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, the principal administrators of the University and, through them, to faculty, staff, and students of East Carolina University. The General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs is chief legal counsel for East Carolina University. The Office of University Counsel is responsible for addressing the university's comprehensive legal needs, including contracts, policies and procedures, employment relations with faculty, EHRA and SHRA employees, litigation coordination, legal advice regarding compliance with applicable regulatory requests, etc.
