Job Overview



The Mining Machinery Engineering Residency is a two-year project-based learning program.  Participants are assigned four modules over two years. These modules will cover various aspects of the Komatsu Mining business areas including global product engineering, manufacturing supply chain & operations, Sales & Service, and international product support.  Each module finishes with a presentation to the leadership team.

  • Ability to immerse you in a hands-on engineering experience, cradle to grave exposure to the products you will be working with.

By the end of the residency program, participants will have a broad understanding of Komatsu Mining, will have built a professional network, gained skills that can be put to good use throughout their careers and developed a better understanding of the future career path they choose to follow.



Key Job Responsibilities





  1. Perform in engineering projects to develop, maintain and support components, products and/or services per market demands, as well as for continual process improvements.


  2. Perform or conduct engineering evaluations including investigations, basic calculations and tests that have well defined requirements and desired outcomes.


  3. Provide conceptual and strategic solutions to solve problems that are associated with engineering projects or evaluations.


  4. Take responsibility for one's own learning and development for the mutual benefit of one's self and the organization.


  5. Act as a group leader for those who are supporting components, products and/or services as well as continual improvements in engineering processes.


  6. Participate in and support programs for effective communication of engineering issues to ensure compliance with global standards for design and safety of products and services, as well as engineering best practices.


  7. Participate in and support improvements to streamline engineering processes used to design, develop, maintain and support components, products, and/or services.


  8. Participate in effective Change Management to achieve the desired organizational outcomes by successfully changing individual behaviors as needed.


  9. Determine the cause of a field problem and propose corrective action if appropriate.


  10. Make field trips to mines to observe machines in operation and gain an understanding of their application parameters. Develop ability to recognize problems and recommend corrective action.




Qualifications/Requirements





  1. Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline, required.


  2. Intern experience in engineering design, machine application, and mining industry, desired.


  3. Experienced in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) tools, desired.


  4. Participation in implementing Lean Engineering principles, desired.


  5. Participation in effective Change Management implementation, desired.


  6. Experience in cross-functional team assignment(s), highly desired.


  7. Certifications or demonstrated project management, desired.


  8. Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies, beneficial.

The Komatsu North America Mining Distribution and Service group is a critical part of our Komatsu global organization.  We, sell, install, service, provide parts and rebuild equipment, as well as provide digital solutions for our customers.  In the United States, we have a presence in 16 states across the US with 30 primary sites.  We have approximately 1,200 employees.   

Our group supports field operations at the customer mine sites as well as shop operations at the Distribution and Service Centers.  A large part of our workforce focuses includes technical trades.
