Location: Hyannis, MA Category: Staff Positions Posted On: Fri Aug 9 2024 Job Description: GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Adult Education Center (AEC) Program Director, ESL Instructors are responsible for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) in a respectful, student-centered, culturally inclusive setting while adhering to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidelines under the Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS) unit. This is a part-time position delivering instruction in person, 2 evenings/week. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Align all curriculum, lesson plans, and instruction to incorporate lead learning standards from the Massachusetts ESL Curriculum Frameworks and the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE). Follow research-based best practices for effective adult learning when delivering the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the CCRSAE. Provide ongoing and measurable interactive activities that reinforce ESL listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with individuals, pair, or small groups. Use a variety of instructional methods, techniques, and tools, including, but not limited to scaffolding, higher-order thinking skills, and differentiated instruction to accommodate differences in learning styles, toward increasing student skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Teach the required number of face to face sessions weekly/yearly, Monday and Wednesday, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM (adding make-up sessions when required). Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans that align with the Massachusetts ESL Curriculum Frameworks and CCRASE standards. Work with the Advisor on a bi-weekly basis, incorporating into the instruction period student Career and Education Plan activities, including but not limited to: goal exploration; an inventory of each student's interests/values/aspirations; skills inventory; computer exploration of occupational choices that relate to student interests and skills, and the exploration of career ladders. Monitor and record student attendance accurately, communicating attendance challenges daily to advising staff and/or program administrators, and submitting student and volunteer attendance records at the end of the last class of each month. Refer students to advising or administrative staff, when necessary. Continuous and timely communication with advising and administrative staff regarding any student, class, curriculum, and programmatic challenges or issues. Arrive for class at least 10 minutes in advance of scheduled start time. Attend scheduled monthly staff meetings. Attend mandatory in-house September Institute Professional Development. Submit required documentation in accordance with deadlines. Assist with intake, orientation, assessment, and advising. Arrange for substitute teachers when absent and providing appropriate lesson plans for them. Attend professional development opportunities as required for program facilitation. Complete and document MCCC (E5) college service: monthly staff meetings, and professional development. Assist with curriculum development and other programmatic issues/events. Participate in trainings for MAPT and TABE testing administration certification, to receive certification and ensure ability to assist with administering MAPT and TABE tests for students. Job Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Bachelor's degree in education or another related field. Three years or more experience in ESL adult education, with demonstrated ability to relate to the needs and interests of adult students in face to face learning programs. Demonstrated ability to organize lesson plans, materials, and work in Moodle as well as execute online textbook materials and activities. Demonstrated experience developing and using multimedia (audio, video, podcasts, online textbooks, etc.) for face to face student engagement in active and collaborative learning activities. Experience using evidence based best practices associated with online learning pedagogy (e.g., frequent communication, active learning practices, working individually or with others, etc.) that support student success in the digital literacy environment. Experience using ongoing formative and summative assessments to inform teaching. Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent problem-solving skills. Experience teaching adult multicultural students. Excellent organizational skills. ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual educator. Experience teaching basic math skills. Knowledge of the Massachusetts Adult Basic Education system. Knowledge of standardized assessments used in the Massachusetts Adult Basic Education system. Additional Information: COMPENSATION : Anticipated starting rate of pay $32.00 per hour for up to 12 hours per week (6 hours of class time and 6 hours of planning time) plus 2 hours/month for staff meetings and up to 12 hours/year of professional development, pre-approved by Program Director. Approximate period of employment: July 2024-June 2025 during the academic year. Part-time, non-benefited, grant funded MCCC Unit position.
