This position will be hired at either a level III or Senior based on experience
Position Summary
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.

This position supports the Carolinas (DEP & DEC) Energy Management System, including network applications such as state estimation and contingency analysis.

Responsibilities:


  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity,


  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities,


  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team,


  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity,


  • Conducts engineering and related studies


  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems, Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies,


  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,


  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,


  • Maintains accurate records and files, and


  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally



Basic Qualifications
Engineer III:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE


  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered


  • Minimum of 4 years of job-related experience



Senior Engineer:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE


  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered


  • Minimum of 6 years of job-related experience



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the utility industry with an emphasis in Power Engineering.


  • Previous experience with state estimation and contingency analysis.


  • Previous experience with PSSE models and powerflows.


  • Previous experience with GE EMS or DMS


  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.


  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.


  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles


  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,


  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.


  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.


  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.


  • Good written and oral communication skills.



Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.


  • Participate in 24x7 callout rotation.



Specific Requirements:

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program


  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
