Pay Range

 

$22.10 - $30.00 Hourly for the 705.1 and 714.0 level

 

This position is under a step structure. Please note that the step placement is determined by your most recent completed academic year.

Job Description

The National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate has an opening for continuing undergraduate student to engage in practical research experience to further their educational goals. You will have research opportunities in a large array of fields such as lasers, laser-plasma physics, electro-optics, software development, and optical, x-ray and nuclear instrument development and testing. You will

 


  • Work alongside scientists doing work and research at onsite and off-site laser high intensity laser facilities in the area of laser plasma interactions

  • Analyze and interpret data from high-intensity laser-plasma interaction experiments

  • Perform computational and modeling work using multi-physics Monte Carlo codes such as Geant4, MCNP or G4Beamlines to model diagnostics relevant to laser-driven ion acceleration

  • Successfully work as part of an interdisciplinary team on research activities under supervision

  • Present research results in team meetings, scientific meetings, peer reviews, and publications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications


  • Must be a college or university student in good academic standing enrolled in an accredited institution pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related field.

  • Relevant experience with data reduction and manipulation, image processing, computer-aided drafting, numerical methods and/or scientific programming languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.).

  • Experience with hands-on experiments at high-intensity laser facilities including experience with fielding nuclear and/or particle diagnostics for laser-plasma interaction experiments

  • Experience with Monte Carlo-based particle tracking software such as MCNP, GEANT4 and/or G4Beamlines

  • Experience or coursework in radiation hydrodynamic codes such as FLASH

  • A sustained record of excellent academic performance.

  • Ability to apply basic engineering or scientific principles to solve technical problems.

  • Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.

  • Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel, Latex and PowerPoint.

  • Active L or Q clearance

  • Ability to travel or work abroad at various laser facilities

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a high quality, polished product in a timely manner.

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by a record of publications, presentations or teaching experience

  • Experience in participating in grant applications

  • Ability/commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.

  • Ability to interact effectively in an interdisciplinary team of scientists as well as independently
